If your going to put a jet chip in your mustang GT, as well as a cool air intake etc.. can you still use regular gasoline (octane 87) or do you have to use a higher octane, like 91 or so??

I know using a higher octane is better and more efficient, but I just wanted to make sure that if I accidently put 87 in numerous times that I wasn't hurting my engine.

If you do a CAI, then you have to get a tune/handheld tuner. And since you are getting that, then there is really no reason for the Jet chip. I don't even think that there is enough performance gains from the Jet chip to make it worth the money, but it's your money...

To put it into a more soothing light... The Jet chip is just that, a preprogrammed chip with no ability to make further adjustments. With either a Diablo or SCT handheld tuner, you have the ability to make adjustments for future mods. The price difference is minimal and so it becomes the only choice that many have gone with in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Well regardless of all that talk, it's all opinion on whether to get a chip or tuner and i'm full aware of all that, but can someone please answer my question about the octane? Can I run 87 in my tank, or is it a must to not but run a certain octane otherwise I will hurt/damage my engine/car.

Anyone know?

The Jet Chip should say whether it is for 87 or 91 octane (premium).

With the Jet module you need to run ATLEAST 89 and they say for optimum performance run 91..Per the instructions.Also there are some CAI's that do not require a tune also..K&N,AFE and a couple others...This should answer your question =)

Thanks, yeah I called them up and that is what they said. I have to run at least 89, if I run 87 i'll hear some pinging etc.. in the engine. How does that improve economy like it says, and help on mpg, when I'll be paying more for a high grade of gas???

Oh well, looks like i'll be paying more at the pump. Does any other tuners, like the predator or SCT XCalibrator 2 require to use a higher grade of gas as well?

With the handheld tuners you can tune for 87, 89, 91, 93 or even custom octanes (Race). You can advance / retard the timing, increase or decrease the A/F.

With the Predator and the X-cal2, you can choose with octane tunes you would like to use, whether it be 87, 89, 91, or 93. Trust me, get one of these over the Jet chip - it's well worth the money spent!

Another plus for the Jet, tho, is that's it's easier on the warranty. Jet claims it will not void it, but you can easily play it safe and pop it out much more easily than changing a custom tune before going to the dealer. IMO

It takes less than two minutes to reflash back to stock with the handhelds.
