A) I hate my job.
B) Police Dept. hires in at exactly what I make.
C) I want to change fields.
D) But, If I stay miserable I could almost double my salary in 2-3 years
E) Any input from elders appreciated

I'm not your elder but this is what I'd consider:

1. Would you be happy in THAT new field? *A* new field, sure, but this one specifically? If not, I wouldn't move. If so, keep thinking.

2. Are you in a financial situation that can allow for the hit in pay, or the lack of a greater income in the short-term future? If not, I wouldn't move. If so, keep thinking.

3. Is your job really that unbearable? If you're doing it now for $X, think of what it'd be like if you were making $XXX. And weigh all options. They all suck at times, but consider the good parts and see whether or not you honestly can't take it anymore.

There's got to be a compromise between happiness & money, but there's no real need to sacrifice either one for the hope of finding the absolute perfect job which probably isn't going to happen to more than 3% of the population...those lucky bastards

You should certainly do something that makes you happy; however, before you jump in and become a police officer, ask if you can do a ride along, speak with some cops and get feedback. The grass is always seems greener on the other side

Police officer is a tough job..mentally and with the hours and weather...physically too. The "glory" of the whole thing wears off pretty quick leaving you waste deep in a job full of B/S and political backstabbing that you just can't imagine. Living with one has thought me well...I turned down an offer some time ago to remain where I am...though the money's not as good I can 'survive' here for the long haul much easier. Wife has 15 yrs in and we both look forward to the next promotion that will finally get her off the street and behind a desk.

I just got a call from the wifey after I texted her about it...

Me "Hello?"

Her ""

Me "I was just thinking about it is all... nothing else just feeling it out."

Her ""

Me "So how is your day" (Subject change/ Jedi Mind Trick)

Her ""

Me "Okay well have a better day "

Her "Okay I gotta go- bye"

I get the feeling she doesn't like the idea

I always like computers and programming, and I've never been stuck on money. But try sitting behind a desk 8 hours a day, gaining weight, staring at the screen wishing you'd done something meaningful.

Maybe it not what you are doing, but who you are doing it for. Being a contract programmer can be challenging, especially if you have to chase a new job when the current contract expires. On the other hand, you get to go places & meet new people, do new projects. With one steady income in the house, it can be fun, or at least different. Writing code for the next blockbuster video game or a defense contractor's weapons system could be very interesting.

Waking up every day to go to a job you hate is NO way to go through life. Money isn't everything, less stress and happiness are very important. The hate you have for the job will start to work its way into your home. Meaning the stress from it will cause you arguements with the wife and make you take your anger out on her.

Doing nothing all day gets pretty boring lol. You have to do something, at least while your young. Police officer jobs = pension = doing nothing after 41 years old lol.
