I'd say take the job that makes OK money that you are happy doing. I make fairly good money right now, but my brain is toast at the end of the day because of all the stress. It's not worth it long term.

Doing nothing all day gets pretty boring lol. You have to do something, at least while your young. Police officer jobs = pension = doing nothing after 41 years old lol.

i like doing things but i dont like to plan anything i dont want to have to do something at a certian time and if i get caught up doing something it can wait till i fell like it. thats the life

Maby right now the police pay what you make or a little more, but ten years down the road, you won't be making much more. Who knows, the right a-hole in office and you might make less. Your probally miserable in you job now, because your under a lot of people, so you get the work they don't want, I know how that feels. Stick with it, and you'll not only make more, but more rank and respect and you'll be much happier.

Maybe it not what you are doing, but who you are doing it for. Being a contract programmer can be challenging, especially if you have to chase a new job when the current contract expires. On the other hand, you get to go places & meet new people, do new projects. With one steady income in the house, it can be fun, or at least different. Writing code for the next blockbuster video game or a defense contractor's weapons system could be very interesting.

Of sorts... no one is a "programmer" straight out of college- takes experience. MUCH experience.

I make like 3/4's what I should have started out at. That is the main thing. I could make enough in real estate to own the building I work at- but I want a stable income I actually enjoy, oh well nobody said it would be easy

You already know my answer to this but I will expound on a few things:

Money doesnt always buy happiness. Not only does job performance decrease as an unmotivated employee, but you home life suffers as well. Sure, you may have to make some sacrifices to work in a field you love, but if it makes you happy then its worth it.

Remember, though, that police work is very time consuming. If you dont have a strong family life or if you are just holding things together, this job will tear it apart.

It'd be hard to raise children in both lines of work, but there's more money in programming by far. I dunno.

For Web Development:


My coworker has 3 years experience and a CS degree. 70+ per year.


I got hired on outta college for a touch over 30K
But I'm glad I at least got a job in my field and should consider myself lucky

But, thats not what I went to school for. I am a diehard programmer. I changed careers fast when I got the opportunity. I dont feel that there is AS much $$$ in web dev than other area's of programming.

I now work on the weapons control system for the Aegis Destroyers. Its a lot of advanced stuff, and so I cant even imagine not calling my job challenging. I already got a promotion and im still not making the money I deserve. Im kind of in a similar boat, I would hate to leave, but I deserve a lot more compensation for my work.
Ever consider leaning towards a different field in programming?

See that's my problem too... I'm MIS which means I don't have the advanced programming knowlege that these other guys do. So I'm thinking of this job mostly as getting paid to learn from highly skilled guys in hopes that I'll be that good in a couple of years. If I had to choose though, I guess it would be web development. I'm learning C# right now

Can't really get into what we do for obvious reasons but I'm currently learning Microsoft Visual Studio .Net more specifically with a C#/ASP front end and a SQL Server back end

That's my problem. I reeeeeally think I'm ADHD if there reeeeeally is such a thing. I can't sit still and pay attention to this crap for more than 5 minutes and I'm up and away after that. Maybe I should go get ridyl... ridelen... redilyn...

Hey man I wish I had gone into a field like that. I now work for the company me mom owns and I am constantly on the go. I have to go to seminars all of the time. I spend 4 to 5 hours listing to some one ramble on. But it is a fast way for me to get my CE.
