Ok well I am getting my car ready to take a very long trip. From here to Mt.Dora to tampa then back. Ok well I just was curious if you guys had any tips on anything I should do to my car before I go. I already went out and bought a spare for my car seeing as it came with none. I am going to get AAA before I leave. And I am going to replace some old heater hoses before I go and bring some spare heater hoses with me just in case. I also plan on changing my oil right before I go and putting some synthetic juice in my tranny. I am going to try and replace my front struts before I go also. And I was thinking of going with some U/D pulleys before I go also because I hear that they not only help with some power to the wheels but help mileage. But I am extremly worried about a charging or cooling problem on the way there, because I have read some pretty disturbing things here... I also plan on filling my tires with puritan98 before I leave. Any other suggestions on anything I should do to my car before I leave. I have a month left before the trip and I really need this to go as smoothly as possible so I can prove to my g/f that my car just a good car to use for road trips as hers. lol . Thanks for your help as usual guys.

I've done five 1000-mile trips with mine in the past year and the only thing to go wrong was a flat tire one time. I also have underdrive pulleys, and I usually average about 23mpg. Not even a hint of overheating. I always have visions of a fuel pump failing or the ignition module frying, but it hasn't happened yet. You shouldn't have to do anything real special besides making sure your fluids are topped-up or changed, air filter is clean, and fuel filter is less than a year old. Oh, it might not be a bad idea to clean the MAF sensor to ensure it runs top-notch. I always bring a toolbox with me in case something breaks that I might be able to Mcguiver on the side of the road. Have fun!

First thing I would check is the belt.....maybe pick a extra one up and take a socket set with you. look around the bay for fluid leaks....if I remember yours is pretty stock and clean.....I don't know about the trans change....as I have been told synthetic can "reveal" leaks we don't know we have....lol....just give it a good once over and the AAA is not a bad idea.....good luck with the trip...

I'm with Will's sentiments. A trip is not a good time to shake down a car after a lot of work being done to it. I'd hold off on anything that can cause issues or is not real necessary. Like 1TMF, I carry tons of spare parts and tools in the trunk too. Take a real jack with you too. Always keep a spare serp belt with you (when I replace one, I put the old one in the trunk).

I'm thinkin of that commercial right now where the kid needs help and Cletis and his buddy stop to help him. The next day the kid is in a cast and is missing teeth.

Good luck.

Check brake pads, fluids, belts and hoses. Make sure your tires are good to go.

Thats pretty much it. Have a good time.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am going to hold off on the u/d pulleys. I still want to do the tranny though. I am just going to drain it, spray the hell out of it with brake cleaner and go over the gasket sealing the fluid in with some silicone cross my fingers and hope it doesnt leak. It doesnt seem like its leaking now. I had filled it because when I bought it it was low and checked it the other day and it was still full so yea.

I also plan on replacing both oil drain plugs because i see some moisture build up against one so Ill just replace both so I dont have to worry about it.

How old is your fuel pump? I am really worried about that one because I think it might be the original fuel pump. Hell if the o2's where the original ones then I dont see how the fuel pump cant be the original one. Since I have had the car I try never to run it below 1/4 tank of gas. And when I put gas in all the time I Fill it up. So yea the fuel pump is my only concern.

Heh, kinda funny... I flew to Houston, TX from Indianapolis, IN to get my car and drive it back (about 1000+ miles). Got the car on eBay and didn't know anything about it really, drove it back w/ no issues other than a broken rear swaybar end link and like 1TallMF, got around 23 mpg. I did however, change the dirty ass air filter on the way. Anyway...

I agree with the above. The key things would definitely be a good jack, extra belt, make sure all of your fluids are topped, maybe even take an extra gallon of antifreeze, just in case -- a small socket set... You seem to be covering the basics. Good luck on your trip.
