Just a quick question. I'm pretty new to my stang and I just put in an AFM PMS and the dierection told me to set the timing to 10. Now I'm used to cars with etched number crank pulleys so this is just a little different. But I'm assuming the first of the three lines is 10 deg??

And this is the spout plug right?

Thanks for the help

turn the motor over untill 1 is on TDC, then that will be 0. Then i would sand off them markers and make new ones that way you know whats what. But it kind of looks like that bal. has spun.

What does that mean that it has spun?

DO NOT ASSUME those marks are correct. the only way to do it right is manually rotate the engine to TDC and see if it lines up. if not then its spun and will spin again and i would invest in a new balancer. by SPUN, that means the outer ring has spun around on the rubber ring and thrown itself off in relation to the hub which is bolted to the crank. old factory balancers tend to do this and its a common problem.

how to find exact TDC get a spark plug stop tool. its a small fitting that threads into the spark plug hole and has an adjustable peg that sticks out, you stick it in there and rotate the engine until the pistons hits the peg. then mark your balancer, then rotate the engine the opposite direction until it hits it again, then mark again, now take those 2 marks and then right in the middle of them is TDC

by the looks of the pic the big long mark is zero, there is a big 0 cast into it under the line. and every mark is 2 degrees. it looks marked like roland said, 0,10,12, and 14. but thats not whats important. what is important is that it lines up right on zero when your engine is on TDC. if not your timing will be off.

you can see the 0 on the HB but I would check that it is still true by checking TDC

I would think when the pistion hits the peg it is at TDC and when you take the those 2 marks and right in the middle of the 2 is BDC

no. the reason there is 2 marks is because you put the stop in the hole to stop the piston from moving. when you turn it and hit the peg it doesnt actually go to TDC, it gets close but not quite, when you turn it around the other way it hits it again, its close but not quite TDC. you have 2 marks, depending on how far the peg is im determines the spacing of the marks (could be less than an inch or a couple inches) but that doesnt matter. now take the 2 marks you have and put another one right in the center, now take the stop out and rotate the engine to the middle mark it is now at exact TDC, it is able to go to the top where the peg prevented it from going before.

if your balancer is correct and not spun, 0 will be right in the middle of the 2 marks which is where your 3rd mark would be.

not knowing if the balancer is correct or not, its VERY hard to find EXACT TDC. using the method i described finds EXACT tdc
