Just got 4:10 installed but...

I did a lot of research on this and other websites before getting gears. I got them for Christmas and had them installed last Friday. Since having them installed I notice gear wine under light throttle like when maintaining a speed.
I also noticed a hiss sound that I haven't noticed before. I carried the car back today and they drove it and listened to it. They said that a little gear wine is normal when going from 3:27 to 4:10. Most cars will have some gear wine. They think the hiss sound is a harmonic sound caused by the change of gears. I got the FRPP gears that everyone recommended on this site. I was just wondering if this sounds "normal" or should I get a second opion from another shop in the area. Nobody metion gear wine when I was doing my reseach before getting gears so I am a little concerned.

mine dont ? they are quite ...... but they can have a noise and still be ok .... so i dont know ..

yea mine did that for the first 100 miles but after a while i dont know if i just got used to it or it went away but mine are quite now.

I have 3.73's and my son has 4.10's. No noise.

Whine under those conditions may indicate too much backlash or insufficient pinion bearing preload. You might want to do three things after draining the diff and removing the rear cover:

1) Check the backlash.
2) Put some compound on the ring gear and check the mating pattern.
3) Remove the driveshaft and measure the torque required to turn the pinion at a steady speed with an inch-pound torque wrench.

Or get that second opinion.

I don't think differential ring & pinion gear whine is ever "normal", new gears or not.

Same Here. I just had my gears (4:10's) and no noise. It seems to me that whining noise would be caused from improper alignment no matter how small and when they say "it will eventually go away" they are really sayin "after it wears in the improper alignment"

I just got back from getting my 4.10 installed. The guy who did it has done over a 100+ 8.8 rear ends. He said 4.10 require shimming 99% of the time (he had to try 3 different shims to get mine to work)

I have no whine, but he said that he has had a couple of cars whine but everything checked out. :dunno:

Whine isn't normal from what I have heard. They may have not spent the time to shim the carrier correctly.

I'd get a second opinion.

yeah dude do exatctly what trinity gt said. you cant go wrong their. A lot of times gear installers dont shim or preload pinion bearing correctly and also dont measure backlash. Either way it sounds like somethings wrong because eccesive whine is definately a problem.
