well it took all day,but so far im pretty happy. the car definetly seems faster.I just took it around the block, and the 1-2 shift is killer 2-3 is better than before, but no chirp, and I didnt get going fast enough to see if O/D is working.one thing I did notice was the fact that one of the little balls was not in the right place, which tells me that the last time the unit ws rebuilt,it was put back together like that. im hoping that may be the reason for the way the trans jumps 3-2 3-2 when the car is hot at around 35 mph.the biggest PITA was getting all the traces of gasket off of the plate/valve body and case, that alone took around 2 hours.then I had to run out for snap ring pliers.had to use a bottle jack to hold the 1-2 accumulator in its bore, while I installed the snap ring.

rockyracoon:

Please post an update after a few more days of testing. Sounds like everything went well. You used a torque wrench (lb-inch) to tighten the valve body bolts, didn't you?

If/when you get rear gears and a tune, a little more shift pressure will make it all work even better.

Nice work on gittin' 'er done.

Nice work, man. I've picked up some transmission fluid and a new filter, and I'm planning on doing the J-mod sometime next week. Two questions for you:

1. Did you drain the torque converter?

2. If you did/didn't, how much fluid did it take to fill it back up?

NYUK98,
Yes I did torque all the bolts.I ended up using my beam style,as my clicker does not seem to be all that
accurate on lower settings, and my inch pound wrench only goes up to 60"

SNEAKY98,
no I did not drain the T/C as mine didnt have the plug.

prolly took about 8 qts. I removed the radiator top line, connected a hose, then started the car, and drained the pan that way. Then when I took the valve body down prolly about 3-4 qts came out.
I ended up reusing all that fluid since it was relatively new and clean, however I did filter it out.

I also installed a tranny cooler last week,so I hope im good to go.

if I were you I would get 12-13 qts if u are draining the T/C or 9-10 qts without draining the T/C.

I havent driven it much, but I will report back with any related news.

rocky:

Good work!

sneaky:

Your '98 will have a small square head pipe plug on the converter, just like mine. Just turn the crank (belt off) until the plug shows up in the inspection opening.

You can always bring back unopened bottles of ATF for a refund. Keep everything clean and lint free. Take pictures so you remember how things were put together. Bag and tag the bolts and other bits and pieces. Use brake cleaner liberally to degrease/clean the parts and BE CAREFUL you keep the brake cleaner far, far, far away from the paint. Brake cleaner can ruin paint in seconds. Use A-Train's how-to articles and take your time. It took me about 6 hours from start to finish (tools away, washing hands) to do the J-mod but I am no faster than an old turtle.

drill hole

my local trans shop is into drag cars, he has a few, he just took down the cover and drilled a little hole in something, put it back together and said test it, driving normal it shifts normal get on it and it grabs spins and grabs throws u back in seat, he said if i want it to slamb all the time he will enlarge the hole, alot cheaper and quicker than kit, i was going to have one installed he offered this alternative, just for everyones info,

why would i ask him that? i could care less who it is. i aint lettin no one drill holes in my tranny; especially when its in the car. metal shavings are very bad for A/Ts. thats if his "buddie" didnt take measures to reduce the debree. i mean come on man i had a 92 formula that i could put a spacer in the TV cable at the TB and it shift hard as hell, guess what it broke. they make kits for a reason i was hard headed and it cost me a good bit of money.
