Just removed the tranny to change clutch......

Well I been saying I was going to change my clutch for a couple years now and I finally got around to it. It wasn't slipping but the clutch would chatter a little sometimes and I had never changed the clutch in this car so I didn't know what was in there. Well when I pulled it out the throwout bearing was in 2 pieces and the bearing retained was really warn. So I'll be getting a new retainer. Clutch looked like it still had life left in it.

Anyone else ever seen one this bad on a car that still drove fine?
Should I buy the Summit Racing retainer or Ford Racing?

wow , its amazing it held out as long as it did . I'd get FR steel bearing retainer, but then I'm partial to FR parts . I'd also consider a new pivot ball , yours looks quite worn . Also look at your clutch arm where the TOB rides , may be tore up considering the shape of your TOB .

I bought the Summit steel retainer, no problems for the last 1000 miles or so.

Agreed. Also, make sure you resurface or replace your flywheel.

I already bought a brand new FR flywheel, but the one that came off the car is perfectly smooth and the clutch is still had a lot of life left in it. I think the chattering was due to the broken throwout bearing.

When you put on the new steel bearing retainer, MAKE SURE it is good. I've seen many new ones lately where the steel sleeve will pull right out of the aluminum casting. I Found out the hard way the first time. There wasn't a proper interferance Or press fit for the sleeve. Pull on the sleeve before you install it and after it is installed.

Mine was a FR Unit, My two buddies both had Summit retainers.

TOB's go out a lot, especially when people drive with thier foot on the pedal. Not saying that is what you did, that that will kill them. TOB's do go out a lot, espeically on Mustangs. Basically, it came apart, but had no where to go to separate, until you pulled it apart.
