Has anybody tried this yet. I decided to try the K&N CAI, but when I went on the website I saw this new Typhoon which is made out of aluminum. I did not think aluminum would be a huge heat conductor and it looks alot better that the plastic one. If you go to K&N's website you can take a look it.
 
I wouldn't call a CAI as waste of money.


K&N is solid, and always has been. It's not a popular option amoung the stangnet people though. I'd give it a shot if I was you, I'd love to see what you thought of it, installed.

Don't they have like the never oil filters or something? It sound be nice.

CAI's dont give you much of a "feeling" of power, but the gains are minimal, but they are there. Plus it gets rid of all the black plastic piping in your bay.
 
It's over $200.
It just doesn't justify 0-5 HP.
The stock tube is not as restrictive as people say.
Look inside it once.
Use your money towards something proven like gears, exhaust, shifter, etc.

Eventually at any level of modding.. an intake will be bought. I dont think I've seen a fairly heavily bolted on car without an aftermarket intake setup.


Though there are cheaper options.. it basically comes down to preferance and opinion on looks. If you have some money, buy what you think lookgs good. :)
 
^^ Wow thats a prety good gain.

I think I might try the typhoon i was looking at one any ways i might as well be the giuine pig on this. Plus Ill even get it dynod since i get them for free.
 
I'm getting the K&N CAI when I get the money. I'm not getting the Typhoon, just the original w/ the black plastic tube. I like the black look and having the filter in the engine bay, and the quality is awesome. Plus, I will be getting an Accufab tb/plenum and a Magnaflow x-pipe soon, so I figure I should pull in as much air as possible.

Ya see all 3 RWHP I gain! :eek: Hopefuly it will surprise me and give some decent numbers (for a CAI). Im getting blown in March so I'll keep the stoker and throw it on and dyno it and then the typhoon and see what the difference is on a blown motor.

Don't believe the people who say CAI's are worthless. They are dyno proven to give you at least a few ponies.. and as said above, if you're planning on going FI down the road, it'll help a lot.

Not useless, but there are certinaly many better places to put your money for a strong $/HP ratio.
 
The aftermarket intake inlet can only increase your HP numbers if your present set up is a restriction. Though I'm not sure of the 99-04 inlet abilities with a K$N filter in place I am VERY aware of the abilties of the K$N filter and stock inlet/box on my 88. My 88 is a fairly heavily modded 302/306 N/A setup making in the region of 300RWHP...yet the inlet and box from ford flows MORE than enough, with an aftermarket filter to fulfill the needes of my motor. In my case going to an aftermarket "CAI" would yeild no gain..there is not a need for more air as the car is. Now the fatory systems draw air from the same location as the "CAI"'s do so with a K$N filter in place I'm willing to bet the car is able to draw enough air from the stock box to meet the abilities of the TB and the heads to flow. As for Temp drop..the CAI's will not create a temp decrease in the time the air is drawn from the fender..to the TB regardless of material it's made of. I will note the CAI's in aluminum look incredible..if they did not F-up my MAF A/F reading (found the bend in the inlet on the fox style was creating air turbulance in the maf reading at higher rpm) I would definately be running one...I love the shiney stuff. The wifes 04 is as stock as stock can be..I will likely go the route of the K$N eventually and will report should I see any "felt gain".
 
The only "true" way to test a CAI is to set the a/f ratio before and after the CAI install, so that any gains you see won't be b/c of the engine running leaner. Also a new stock air filter should be installed before the base run and do runs with and without the stock snorkle.

The next run is a 1 mile higway run from one exit to another. I tried to keep the same speed and driving habits so the data can be relevant.

Right away you see a differene of 18F in average IATs. Since the K&N filter is more exposed, air flowing through the engine bay can be sucked in by the K&N filter. The stock filter being enclosed in a plastic shell, can only suck air from a small area, close to the fender. With K&N you can get IAT as low as 68F. So, once the car is moving, K&N IAT will dramatically drop and will ahve cooler charge than stock even though it's not a cold air intake kit, jsut the fact it can be in contact with the air outside flowing through the engine bay can reduce IAT.

Here's a graph of both runs. You can see those two fine curves, those are the VSS of both runs, in MPH, so you can see the speed are very close to each other in both runs.
