Keep the 289 or go for the 302?

depends on whether you are comfortable with assembling your own short block vice the extra cost. You have to be the judge of that.

Your 289 block will work fine for a 331, if you decide to do that.

I found that by the time I bought the kit, bought a block, paid for the machine work for the stroker kit to fit that it is just about as cheap to have them send you a shortblock assembled and balanced and blueprinted. And it will be a new block. I was going to buy a rebuilder for a 100 or 200. Just what I decided. then I added up the parts to finish it to a long block and it was just as much as having them do it. Then I had them button up the bottom with a canton pan, install the timing cover and balancer. I guess I'm just lazy.

ps. I got mine from DND and the kit was almost 1500 cause it was forged steel crank, H-beam rods, and forged alum pistons. So the price was close. At 1100 for a kit it may be different.

I would go with the CHP except the freight from California to NY will be real ugly. Get the total cost on each option.
