Knock....Tensioner Pulley?!

Guys, one of the other things I did when i put the h/c/i on was get a diff belt. I had pullies, but put back on my stock alt pulley to deal with charging issues...anyway, yesterday i started noticing a knock at idle. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine(at first I thought it was valvetrain or something catosptaphic). I went back and saw some of you guys had problems when deleteing the smog pump with the tensionor hitting the stop plate? or stop, and that was making the knock. Could anyone show my a pic or tell me exactly where this is(i know exactly where the tensior is). My water pump is new also. Thanks for the help!!

maybe you have ruled this out but i had this weird problem....my underdrive water pump pulley would occasionally hit the balancer every once in a while during their rotations and there would be a metal on metal knock. I had to grind down my pulley. this was only when i first put my pulleys on like 2 years ago.

yeah its just the tensioner hitting the stop, I had to buy a smog delete pully and the actual belt like $80. havent had a problem since, btw i tried two different belts before i went to the smog delete and both of them ended up stretching and hitting, and both couldnt have been tighter

could someone tell me where the stop is? Like is it a metal piece on the top, or bottom, just so I could look when it is running. The knock doesn't get faster with revs(like if it were a valvetrain is) it is basically when it is at idle, and it doesn't even happen all the time. Oh well.

Seems to me that the stop is internal to the tensioner. You can put a wrench on the tensioner bolt (~15mm or SAE equivelant IIRC) and slip the belt off and note its range of travel.

I think we have wear indicators on the tensioner too.

Good luck.

its located on the tensioner towards the bottom on the side that faces the center of the motor, its just a little tabe that sticks out that hits another tab on the movable piece of the tensioner, hope that helps

Ah ha...thanks very much for the pic and info. I will have to look at that thing next. Is it fare to say that if it only happens sometimes, and only sometimes that the valvetrain can be ruled out. I mean if a rocker was loose or something or there was a piston to valve issue it would always be there right? Thanks

it'll be the tensioner.... mine did that, and it sounded as if the motor was about to come apart.... talk about being worried, it did this right after a head gasket swap(i removed the ac the same time as the gasket replacement).

:nice: get it figured out and report back.... all you have to do is crank the car, and watch the thing, you will see it moving and hitting if it IS the culprit.
