Knocking Sound was Rod's

Well Mechanic told me today the knocking noise in my engine was from the rod's and they are going he told me im better off getting a short block because its gonna cost me alot for labor so im better off getting the full thing ya know?

Can i have some sites to look for these? like the stock block is fine.

Can't he just buy a rebuild kit? Crank, rods and pistons to have put in his current block? Wouldn't that cost about the same as finding a different motor?

ah does this sound wierd to anyone else.....rods? how does your mechanic know this without tearing into the motor?

It's probably a good guess. You can be pretty accurate by listening to the motor.

Check out the links someone posted above. You're looking at around 1500 for a stock-like shortblock. Your mechanic is right. Unless you plan on doing the labor yourself, you're not going to do it any cheaper, and you'll probably run into other trouble that'll end up costing you more.

i was gonna buy a motor from these guys for my 2nd pony.

they sell short/longblocks that are very capable, for a very reasonable price.

i'll see if i cant dig an ebay link up for ya. i do recomend cruising around on they're site though, they will build you a motor with ANY part you want!

Where can i find this rebuild kit?
I found a friend that will take out my motor, put the new parts in and put hte motor back in for cheap labor since hes a friend and hes my age.

Weather it's the rods or the piston, or the crank.... The point is that it's the bottom end. On an expensive or nearly new motor, it might be worth it to drop the pan and repair it. Not on a 302W though, especially with some age and milege. Fix one thing and you'll be back in there sooner more than later.

COST, that is the question. It might cost more, but for what you get I say a 331/347 stroker shortblock would be best, but that would easily add up to about $3000+ once everything is done. A standard rebuild will cost between $1200-1600. How many miles on the motor. Under 100K miles and well taken care of you might want to see about having it refreshed. That would be possible if the cylinder bores and crank/rods are not out of spec, they can rehone and ridge reem the cylinders, pollish the crank and put new rings on and fix your problem for probally a lot less than even a rebuild.

I've got a fresh 306 never run in my garage, but it's a flat tappet motor, I would sell it cheap just to get rid of it. You would need the adapter lifters to run a roller cam in it.

I don't know if I understood you well enough, but when 90.... offered his 306, its the same as a 302, just bored .030 over. Bolts up like a stocker.

Well listen i think i should buy a rebuilt shortblock motor or my question is where can i buy a rebuild kit that has everything for a complete shortblock rebuild included in it?

Well, first to rebuild the motor, you'll need to get the block machined. Then the rebuild kit, and if you have a rod that's bad, you need to replace that. Not to mention the machine work on the crank and rods. So you have the knowlege and tools to rebuild an engine?

No i don't.

I was planning on doing this, buying the summit rebuild kit. giving my mechanic my car and telling him to take out the small block, rebuild it and put it back in.

How much should that charge me around?

I don't trust mechanics, plus they don't know a mustangs as well as we do. Open her up. If you do need one hit up your local pullpart yard, pick'em up for $60 and rebuild it yourself. I can did mine for $400. I know schucks sells longblocks for about a grand, but their remans. Shouldn't be too bad.
