Progress Thread Komo's 1990 GT - Parts Gathering Purgatory & Home Remodel

Sold my Tacoma, gonna take $5k of the proceeds to play with the Mustang, and invest the remainder.

Not in any rush but want to have a plan on what needs to be done. Kinda want to blow it on a KB, but also don’t. Im unsure about slapping a supercharger on a high mileage motor. Like I don’t want to spend $6k on a KB then immediately have a blown engine or something that’ll cost another $5-10k.
Is the KB SMOG legal in CA? Also, why not use the money to build the engine first to support what the KB will add later?

It is. That was sort of the point of my post... kinda at a crossroads as my engine may need a refresh... but then if im doing a refresh why not do heads/intake at the same time (i think i want to keep the cam stock this go around). But, i also want a supercharger, haha. Was hoping to get some opinions on where to go with the build.
Then you'll pay twice as much for the KB if they can be found by then.
' Do it now' as an old friend used to say.
Life's rough.......wear a helmet.
Thats what i'm worried about. The KB may go up in price, California may be California and like outlaw it in the future, or it may just not be available in the future like how it went out of production previously. The Vortech V3 is for sale for $5,300 but also doesn't require a GT40 lower intake manifold, so really is slightly cheaper in the long run.

So hold up here. How many miles are on the motor? If it's less than 100K and the compression is good then put the blower on it and send it.
I wish, motor has 167k and I’m not sure about compression numbers. Guess I could check that before making any major decisions.

Not sure if it really matters but the guy I bought it from had a 90 mile per day commute so I think most of the miles are highway.

I bet the compression is pretty solid. If it is then the only thing I would suggest is valve springs if they have a lot of miles on them, change the oil pump, and timing chain set. If do all that and the water pump is suspect then I would change that as well. Do some research on the water pump as the bulk of them (including Motorcraft) are made in China.

100% you need to do a compression test before making any purchases. Maybe buy a cheap bore scope to take a look in there as well.

Damn, was hoping Kenne Bell would have a Black Friday sale. Tempted to pick up a supercharger and lower manifold and stock away for some future use. I just foresee prices going up or California outlawing them at some point.
I had the same thoughts a while back. I did some mental back and forths and ended up going w/ Vortec. I was pretty set on getting the KB though. So much so that I found and bought a lower intake for it. I came across a Motorsport GT40 lower on ebay and snagged it. Supposedly it's one of the over the counter Ford lowers you'd buy at the dealers back in the day.

Good luck which ever way you go. I really like the Vorech. It's easier on the drive train and tires the way it builds boost and peaks. The KB sure sounds fun though. I bet it feels great.

I’m wondering if I can do both (KB and engine refresh) and just extend my timeline to save up for parts/labor. I can’t do the deep engine work of a rebuild. Was maybe thinking of getting the KB, saving up and refreshing the shortblock and adding heads while I’m in there. All the supporting mods and then just have whoever is doing the engine work install the KB all at the same time since it would be apart anyways.

Decisions decisions. At the same time I need my hood painted and want a cobra rear bumper too since my ground effects behind the tires / in front of the GT bumper need to be painted anyways as well.

I've got a positive displacement supercharger on my 04 GTO and to me there is nothing like the feeling of instant torque. Would it be faster with a centrifugal at the track? Maybe, possibly, but I've not been to a track in at least 10 years.
There are no tracks within a quick drive of San Diego besides maybe the 1/8th mile track at Barona (if that’s still there) but I don’t plan on tracking it anyways. Just a fun cruiser.
With 160+ miles of hyway it’s like 80k miles so your short block should be good to go, but check compression.
I’m making some assumptions, I do know for a fact he commuted it a lot on the highway but I don’t know about the previous owner. It originally came from Las Vegas from what I was told. A forged 331 like my previous Fox would be ideal. But that also probably blows my budget at this time. Again, something I could save up for over time. Then it’s how long will the transmission last, then… then… then… lol this ain’t my first rodeo I know how it goes. However I’ve never had a supercharger and it’s something I’ve always wanted.

If I could tackle the supercharger install on my current long lock, if I ever did have the engine built at least I wouldn’t be paying for double labor so to speak.
