Labor cost.

What is a fair price for a shop to install a new shortblock. Im looking into buying one and just want to know what the average price is for doing this. Or would it be cheaper to just buy the whole rotating assembly(pistons, rods, ect) and have them use my block. Would the prices be about the same??

your better off buying the entire shortblock. it will cost more in labor for the install of the internals and would actually cost more.

shop labor cost vary, but 70/h is a good guess. I am not sure of the number of hours they will quote you though. I cant remeber the name of the book to find out either lol.

So i guess it would be easier to just get a built shorblock. How much or long do u think it would take to swap out shortblocks and put everything back together.

Its a pretty labor intensive job. It would probaly cost more than a normal engine swap because you would also be transferring old heads onto the new engine and whatnot. I wouldnt cheap out on it and go with a shop that isnt expensive, and may not do quality work.

The cheapest (but not always do-able) way is to grab a few buds and some tools and do it yourself. I think thats a given though, lol.

I was quoted $1400 at $70 hr Not including parts and fluids. I am planning on $2k just to be safe.

do it yourself. Taking the other engine out is easy. Just lable all the wires and stuff with tape to let u know where they go again when u unplug them. And throw the new engine in. It will be an experience and cheap

Plus if you mess up, it would be easier and cheaper for you to tkae the car (with new engine in it) to a shop to have them get it running...than it would for u to have them take out an old engine and throw in a new one

Im in your boat bud, my mechanic is gonna install a short block port polish my heads custom cut me some cams. He said it would be around 6000. But he is worth the cost.
