It's time to replace the old gas tank. I'm hoping to replace it with a bigger tank to get a bit more range. 2 questions:

1. Will a 20 gal tank for a '70 fit? Or will some other larger tank fit?

2. Can I use the sending unit for a '68 if I use a tank from a '70, or do I need the '70 sending unit?

1. its a dropin..but the trunk floor will no longer be flat.

2. IIRC yes, but it will read incorrectly unless you bend the tank arm. Someone else may know how to bend the arm correctly, I havent done it myself.

Using a 69 (20 gallon) tank is a popular swap for the 67-68s. I just bought one for my 67. Maybe the 68 sending unit will work if modified, but you're better off using the one that matches your tank. I bought a kit that comes with the tank, sender, filler hose, and the mounting hardware. All for $110 plus shipping from Doc's Mustang.

Yah I have a 22 gal 70 tank in mine had to mod the filler neck but other than that works fine. I am using a 70 sending unit as well.

Do you have any pics? I'd like to see how much it sticks up compared to stock.

Did you use the '70 sending unit?

I know I wasn't asked, but on the 65 I had to bend the filler opening on the tank a little with some precussion persuasion, nothing to heavy, just the body hammers with the pointed end and a little gentle persuasion. Then cut a little off of the end of the filler neck. My friend tried to cut the head off, cut out a little and reattach it, but he butchered it, luckily I had a spare. :)

Do you have any details on the filler neck mod? Did you cut, bend, weld...all of the above?
Like 65mistress said you shorten the filer neck a coupe of inches and you will have to re-angle the neck on the tank I used a piece of pipe placed inside of the neck and a little judicious force to get the correct alignment. Cut bend but don’t weld it is galvanized after all.

Jester-
Did bending the neck at the opening with a pipe oblong the opening? That's what I was afraid would happen if I did that.

Light buld is for referance and the ziplock is to keep crap out of the tank during test fitting.Hope this helps. I will only keep the full size pics up for a couple of days but if you need them after that just ask.:SNSign:
