what is everyone running for a cam with there stock heads?
whats the largest cam lift I can run.e303???

Stock '86 heads with an aftermarket cam is pissing away time and money. Like was said in the other thread, you're better off keeping the stock cam and buying heads.

I'm mostly going for the exhaust sound.my engine is going to be torn down to the heads any way so I figured I'd cam it.

I can get this cam brand new for 139.99

my 86 5.0 has a stock roller cam in it right?

if you had a flat tappet cam in there someone has put a non roller block in your car. 86 H.O cars were roller. an E-303 is about the biggest piece of garbage out there. If you are set on an OTS cam I would get the TFS-1. Great cam, good power range, little lope at idle.

Now if you want to save a buck and still have that choppy sound pull a vacuum line off the intake or vacuum tree. It will lope, buck, and stall with the best of the cammed cars and then you can always plug it back in when you get tired of the crap. DD'ing a car with a lopey cam is a kick in the nuts. I understand you want your mustang to sound and act like a race car, but if you do this I gaurantee that you will hate it and want your stock cam back when the car falls on its face off the line.

True story. A friend of mine wanted that same lopey sound and shoved an F cam into a stock 306. End result. It sounds great in the parking lot, but my Dodge truck will outrun it. No balls until 3500 rpms and after that the stock heads are running out of breathing room.

IMO... there's nothing at all wrong with the sound of the 86 stocker cam. If you're not getting that low growl from the 86 stocker then your exhaust system has issues that need to be addressed.

I always loved the way that cam made the car sound but would never consider buying a cam based soley on how it sounded.

Get one that's going to make the engien combo do it's best and modify your exhaust to achieve the exhaust note that you want.

I respectfully dissagree, A friends car has been 10.35 stock bottom end 302 edelbrock heads, novi2000 and E cam!, I wouldn't call that garbage.

GT40 heads would be good but I would use a TFS stage 1 cam with them.

I got gt40 heads.was looking at cams,everyone says the tfs stage 1 cam is what I should go with.was looking at the x303 and the rpm range is 2200-6200rpm and a .542 lift.was doing some checking and it seems to me that this is a better cam for my car then the stage 1.am I wrong?.

86 didn't have valve reliefs. Be careful. I have always heard anything over 500 lift was asking for trouble with flat top pistons.

How does "lift" have anything to do with pistons having or not having valve reliefs?
I assume you're talking about piston/valve interference?

Hint; the piston is moving.

You will HIT! you cant even run GT40 heads with 86 Flat top pistons! You would need your pistions notched..

you can get away with ECAM and E7 Heads thats about all. What ever you decide to do you will have to check PTV clearance.

Why is it going to "hit"?
Explain why please.

I also want to know if you've done this yourself?

I'll give another hint; I can have a camshaft with 1.0" of lift and it won't hit the piston...

if your wanting a cam for sound.. i have an e303 with 1.7rrs (i have notched pistons), and it sounds pretty nasty. i guess get a cam like that or tfs1 with 110 or 112 lsa, but the lift really has nothing to do with vc, so i guess just pay attention to timing events to know if youll hit. and i dont know much about those heads but i doubt they flow past .500 lift so y go further. e303 with 1.6rr will put u at .498. tfs1 i think is .498 and .510 or something like that which would be good for the exhaust side.

oh and on your heads your gna want a cam that is exhaust biased. like the tfs 1. the fms cams are single pattern cams. do some research and youll know exactly what your looking for... orrrr go get a custom grind =)
