He tell's me he gets a bang, and now the car sounds like it has a large exhaust leak. I checked all header bolts, nothing. It is deffinatly comming from the drivers side, the car hasnt lost any power, and goes up and down with rpm, if you keep it a constant 2 or 3k rpm its quiet. It's not popping on decel either????? What can this be? It dosnt seem to be running any different but you can hear it, It sounds like an exhaust psst psst, and under any type of load get's louder, and ticks????? Any help guy's?

Could be the header gasket. They can blow out, and the bolts will still be tight. Had that happen a few times to me.

Yeah, just replace the header gaskets. I had a story once that started out that way..let somebody borrow my car. Ended with a broken clutch cable and a busted ignition.

I would suggest using copper gaskets to prevent it from happening again, if this is indeed the issue.

Parchisi, when I read the title I thought of your experience.

For those that enjoy a stogie occasionally, sometimes one can watch a puff of smoke be blown around by a leak.

It seems to me like a smoke machine (shooting air up the tailpipe) could also work, though I haven't tried it.

Good luck.

He could have blown one of the seams on your muffler, that is very possible.

And if you dont feel like renting a smoke machine... go buy some dry ice, stick it in the tailpipes and cover the ends and you'll discover your leak.

Good luck!

I had this happen once in another car. Unburned fuel built up in the exhaust, and ignited with a loud bang. Made my oval muffler more round. I can see it pushing a joint apart, either in a muffler or at the clamps.
