So how exactly does the stall speed relate to everything?? I plan on running a 99% street car.

I have a 2400 B&M hole shot.

Is this OK on a 383? I havent changed my gear ratio yet so if possible ill get a gear to compliment the Converter but im not sure how that works.

I still am yet to have Ed Curtis to grind a cam and i hear that the cam plays a role in this as well.

So without me buying a $500 new converter is there anyway i can make the 2400 work with the right rear gearing???

TQ converters are like Chinese to me. I know that when i had this 2400 in my H/C/I 302 with 373 gears it pulled like hell.

Oh i know this is 94/95 talk but i do not use a AODE....I have a Built AOD (pre94) With a manual valve body.

Please someone shed light onto the subject so i can get the correct Cam/ Converter/ Gear selection.

Chris

The stall speed is the RPM when the torque converter stops "slipping". So with a 2400 stall TC, if you have it in gear and the break pedal jammed to the floor, when it hits 2400 rpm (or thereabout), either the engine will stall or the rear breaks will give way and you will start smoking the tires.

Stock street cars have a low stall (around 1800-2000). Race cars have high (3500 ish) stall speeds so they can take off at a higher rpm and not lose traction.

For 99% street cars with big motors (like ours), i think 2400 is a good compromise.

Do you still have the 3.73s in the rear?

though i dont have a 383, i am running a 2400 stall converter with my setup from Edge Performance in CA. great to deal with. infact, he sent me a 3200 originally and Mike Dez told me it was way too high for my application and he said no problem send it back and i will tweak it. so far, so good.

BlackVert I'm actually about to put the gears in soon. I have them in a box with new 31 spline axles. The car seems kinda sluggish probably because i have stock gears in there now. I had this same motor with 3.73 gears in another car and it screamed. I guess it doesn't like those stock 2.73's

Hey inphiniti man how have you been? Are you still in the Providence area? Basically a 383 is identical to a 408 except with a 3.75" crank instead of a 4.00"

According to the '95 Ford service manual the stall spec is 2459 (minimum) and 2904 (maximum). The issue with the stock TC is it's tendency to "balloon" above 5600 rpm or so I've read. For my application I'm using a built 2600 stall.

I think it will work great with your 383 on a street car. Any more stall than that and it's going to be putting off too much heat IMHO. Just be a pita to drive around town. Those B&M hole shots are a great deal for the money. I even met a guy who had a Hole Shot and then spent big money on a custom Neil Chance converter. The car actually ran consistently faster on the Hole Shot. Just make sure Ed is aware of what stall you are running when you have him grind the cam. 3.73s should be fine too.

Buy a transmission jack. It's only like $70 on Harbor Freight. Worth every penny.
