Lets put an end to welds on cobra brakes!!!!

I know it's like beating a dead horse, but i either been told things from local shop that i know are going to **** it up, or read different thing over the net that has me going in circle.

So i''ll start on the front. I'm looking to do Skinnies, Want to know what size spacer i would need, what size wheel studs, and what lug nuts i would need to make it track legal?

Now the rear. i would like to do a 15 x 10, but i do not want to beat the inner fender in, or grind down a caliper bolt. I don't like hackin up my car, for that i'll just keep the drag radials on my stock cobra rims.
So i would like to know Backspacing, and tire size, and i was told i would need a spacer for the rear also?

Thanks for any info in advance, and if you have pics whore away.lol

Joe

I couldn't tell you what to do up front, but out back a general rule of thumb is that the BS can't be anymore than 7" MAX. I run 6.75" BS on my 17X10.5's and I didn't have to flip the quad shocks or roll the fender. IMO it is the best BS for our cars as it couldn't fit any better. To be legal with the lug nuts you will need open ended and with Welds you need to run shank style nuts. I'm 99% sure that in order to be legal and have enough of the wheel stud sticking into the wheel you are going to need 3" studs up front and out back due to the way the welds are designed. People test their luck and don't run longer studs but its not somehting i would do, especially after you see how thick the center part of a weld is.

I thought the rear brakes were the same on a GT and a Cobra. If that's the case, then I'm running a 15x10x5.5bs and they stick out about 1/8" but look just fine. A 6" bs might sit a little more flush, but a 5.5 will do the trick. The tires are some M/T ET Streets 26x11.5x15

Regarding the front, a buddy of mine is using 1" spacers. He'll probably reply to this with more detail, but I know that anything less won't work on a cobra. I had to sand down the brake bracket in order to get my wheels to fit on my GT.

Paul ~ the back spacing on the rear is were i get a whole range of answers.

see the local rims shop said i should be find with a 5.5 back spacing, but someone also told me that 5.5 on a 10" wheel is going to have the rim stick out of the fender a bit. (which i don't want at all).
So i figured that i'l go with a 6.5 BS ( if i could get it) and that inch should tuck the wheel inside the fender. Then i was told that i would need spacers on the rear anyway, because, even thought the caliper is the same as a GT the rotor is larger. Which would cause a caliper clearance issue with the rim. WTF

I could careless if i had to ditch the quad shocks, but rubbing, grinding and BFH usage is what i'm trying to avoid.

BTW i thought your bograts were 15x10.5, not 17?

95 vert ~ like i said above the caliper is the same but the rotor is bigger. Do you have any rubbing issues, running with that size tire? if you have pics please post them.
If i remember correct i think a 1.25 spacer was recomended for the front, but wouldl like to hear and see what other with cobra brakes run up front.

Thanks for your input guys.

anyone else with info please post up.

Thanks
Joe

Sorry man, I don't have any pics, but I have 0 rubbing issues.

I completely understand you when you say you don't want them sticking out, and I am the same way. I had some 27x10 Hoosier drags mounted on them and they stuck out close to 1/2" and I hated it. I sold the tires and was getting ready to sell the wheels, but after seeing them with the M/T ET streets, I really liked it and they hardly stuck out any.

Paul (punisher), is very picky about crap like that, and even he liked the way they looked on my car AND his car, as he test fitted them.

Well I have some experience with this so I'll tell you my thoughts. Keep in mind I run Bogarts not Weld rims.

Front: Bogart welds on a 1" spacer and everything clears just fine. The rims just barely stick out nothing crazy. You will need some ARP studs. Don't Don't Don't get the Moroso junk you have to drill out the holes etc. Spend the $90 on the ARP studs. I bought my studs from Maximum Motorsports, I can't remember the part number. They are very very easy to install, you don't even have to take off your brakes. For details on the easy install let me know. As for the lug nuts just use an open end shank style nut...Weld can give you the correct lug nuts. This setup you will be perfectly legal at your local track.

Rear: Cobra rear brake rotors at 11.65" where as GT brake rotors (I think) are 11". This is just enough to push the banjo bolt out to hit the rim. I purchased 15""x10" rims from Bogart with 6.5" backspacing they fit great with tons of clearance and I run a 28" tire. But I did have to grind the **** out of the banjo bolt before the rim would clear. No spacers are needed.

The only fix I know is to swap to GT brakes. Or run a 16" rim in the back and run a 26x10.5/16 ET Street. Just the way it is.

I have since swapped to a full manual brake setup from Strange and it is the ****. I eliminated the front spacer which sucked the wheels back in.

good luck.

so i could just swap to GT rotors out back and run a 15X10 with 6.5 BS and not have to grind the banjo bolt etc...?

so this is my list so far correct me if anything is wrong:

1"spacer for the front
3"ARP studs all around
open end shank style lugs nuts all around
11" rotors for the rear so i can mount a 15"X10" with 6.5 BS rim without and issues?

Thanks Again too everyone who posted

I'm running 15x3.5 prostars up front on 1" spacers that have their own studs; no problems at all and they are daily driven. I have a friend running telstars on the same spacers in an 04 cobra with zero problems too.

If you go that route you'd knock your list down to spacers, lugnuts and rotors.
I haven't tried wheels that size on my car for the rear yet.

No i haven't until now Grady.

A tad off topic, he uses a 10" wide rear wheels for the street and an 8" with slicks for the track? I would of thought the opposite

Thanks
Joe

Well it has been a long time since I saw that site but IIRC it was the front
that was the most interesting.

I wanna say he ran NO spacers with GT brakes.
