A Q on a different site was asked about Ceramic coating vrs No coating.

I've always heard more power can be found if you can keep the heat
contained.

A fellow had this to say .........

my stock headers would read 575* and my ceramic coated LTs would
read 350* and that was taken at about 93* ambient temp

Thats quite a difference

Anybody got any reliable hard data showing power gains?

Of course ... the Ceramic coating offers less heat and a nicer appearance
but
My main interest is in power gains

This could be a good discussion
and
We just might learn some good stuff

Good discussion Grady.

A side effect of my HTS coated MAC longtubes were that engine bay temps shot up quite a bit.

I noticed that on average my incoming air was 15-20 degrees hotter according to the IAT sensor! I'm using an eBay CAI with the filter in the fenderwell.

Any headers I buy in the future will be either Jet Hot or ceramic coated.

Wes

Also - we put the same headers - only in ceramic - on Sage2k's car and his engine bay temp is MUCH cooler than mine.

I don't even know what coating is on my LTs. They're now rust coloured.

WOW! Great topic BTW Grady. I WRAPPED mine because I am cheap. Garrage kept, 3rd car, no rain allowed ,lol. So let's add that to the equasion.

P.S. I was not going to wrap mine this time cuz I didn't think it mattered...do you think I should?

the only way i see underhood temps affectin power is through intake air.

-but how long does it take for air to get from the filter to the intake valve at WOT?? i doubt long enough to be SIGNIFICANTLY effected by engine bay heat. if that wasnt the case then CAI's would make no power over an underhood filters simply because it would become heated on its way through the motor. i dont believe that happens.
-now if your sucking in 350F+ air to start with, then 350F, 450F or 550F i dont think is gonna make much difference considering 350F is NOWHERE near ambient anyways.

but thats just intake stuff. maybe cooler/hotter exhaust gases flow differently

Good point on the intake 94. I would only buy Grady's method of CAI though. Do a search and you will find info on that if curious.

do you think the crimped restricted tubes also caused the stockers to get hotter?

i wish i had a way to measure temps on my shorty uncoated BBK headers. my underhood temps feel cooler now than b4, but also instead of high speed fan coming on @ 220 it now comes on @ 190

What kinds of coating are there? Ceramic, Jet Hot, and something else? Jet Hot is the best huh?

HTS coated, as Wes noted. Jet Hot is said to be the best.

I have my collectors wrapped since they are less than an inch from the tranny.

Some info I found. This 1 Might be bias cuz it is from the vendor:
"Wrapping can significantly decrease underhood temperature by up to 45% or more. Promotes a cooler denser intake charge and avoids premature failure on costly engine components due to thermal deterioration. also increases exhaust gas velocity and increases horsepower. "

On JET HOT:
The JHC, OTOH, puts a thin ceramic coating on the INSIDE as well as the outside, so it insulates the PIPE as well as the surrounding components. The excess heat goes out the exhaust.

So theoretically a ceramic or Jet coating with wrapping would be best?
Would be nice if someone could get to a dyno with a few sets of headers with different coatings

mine are ceramic coated but im fairly sure they get hotter than 350 degrees
cooler than Stanger007's but still quite hot, definatey hotter than stock
