Lifter Noise

Hi:
I have what I think is lifter noise. My question is, how can I tell the cause/ remedy? I have a 66 coupe with a 289 and AT.

I did not have the noise until I added a new Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock manifold. I would like to think I could resolve it by replacing the manifold gasket, but if I do that and it does not do the trick I have wasted quite a bit of time and a little money. I pulled spark plug wires, one at a time, until the noise stopped.

Any thoughts?

try some marvel mystery oil.

change your oil, and add 4 qts of regular oil and one qt of this stuff.

i've also heard ATF instead of marvel, but it's a last ditch effort before you consider new lifters and a cam . .

When you pulled the plug wires one at a time and found the one that taps that tells me the valves on that cylinder need adjusted. The cylinder firing causes a push on the valve face and a loose rocker will show up, when there is no fire in that cylinder ther is no pressure on the valve face, no tap.
This probably happend because of the new parts you installed, hence you drive it harder now. adjust the valves and check the rocker studs are not pulling out of the head, stock SB heads had pressed in studs, exept the Hipo 289 had screw in studs.

i'd do the rocker arm adjustment first, then oil change if it doesn't go away.

Thanks for the response to my lifter noise. It was perfect! While i had the cover off I checked the other rockers and had to make several adjustments. It was fast and easy, and best of all it worked.
