A while back, I bought a used 8" center section for my King Cobra. Now that the engine is done and I'm putting everything back together, I dragged it out to look it over. It has Richmond 3.80 gears, and an Auburn Pro differential. It looks good, but I know very little about them, so I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice on what to look for? I know that the Auburn diffs have clutches in them, but how do you tell if they're still in good shape, other than to install and light 'em up?

Look for excessive wear, small metal chips, peices etc.
The Auburn that I have required a bottle of friction modifier to quiet it down.
If it looks pretty good, plug and play.

Only way i know how to checklimited slip units is with them still installed. There is a tool that adapts an older bar style (non click type) torque wrench to your wheel hub and with the opposide wheel on the ground or locked up in some manner, there is a torque value you look to be within before the wheel your twisting starts to move.

But I have yet to even check one out like that. Usually just plug-n-play and see what happens.
