Long Tubes and catted shorty X pipe in NJ?

Does anyone in NJ run long tubes and a short catted X-Pipe without any problems passing inspection...

The past 2 times they hooked the car up to the computer for codes and checked underneath with a mirror. I'm thinking as long as they see the one cat I should be fine.

I'm trying to plan a new exhaust, but I don't want to go through it and not pass.

i dont know that if longtubes are outlawed anywhere but Im thinking you should be fine as long as you have cats on it.

I think the issue with long tubes is that it forces the cats to be relocated farther down the exhaust system. The farther the cats are away from the engine itself the longer it takes for them to heat up (greatly reducing the efficiency). Pretty much this would force your car to fail on a visual inspection, even if it passes the emissions testing.

I live in Bergen county nowadays and I just had this converstation 2 months ago with a private inspector. He said that if you car's exhaust looks in any way modified from stock ahead of the catback you will fail. They have a way to look up what your mid pipe is supposed to look like on a chart or something. I failed in Lodi last year because of a side exit catback, in NJ they will fail you for anything. Good luck finding a friendly inspector either, best of my knowledge they don't exist in NJ, if you find one let me know.

That correct...

LT's are illegal in every state but some states don't enforce the issue or even do inspections other then safety. Sadly NJ has adopted the stringent CA inspection laws so LT's aren't worth the hassle here.

Exactly...I live in NJ touch the exhaust you fail. That being said iv had longtubes for over two years short h and loudmouth 1's. It can be passed, but not at STATE inspection centers if you know what im saying

well try and pass it, and worst comes to worst, take it to an indpendent place if you fail Maybe they will overlook stuff

I know there are ways to get it passed if I do LT's but I'm tired of looking for people to do it.

I actually had a chat with the state inspector the last time it got inspected and he said just gut your cats. As long as it looks stock and doesn't throw a code you're fine.

So I guess I'll just do shorties and gut the stock cats

nahh i think youll pass, i went through with a catted x pipe berfore and cat back as long as you have cats you should be fine. and when its time for me to go back since i have longtubes no im gonna try and pass with them. if not go to someone and pay 40 bucks im sure they are easier to get by. i think youll be fine.

who told you that?! how the hell do you think GUTTED cats are going to pass the NJ sniffer test?!?!

My car has never had the sniffer test. The state inspector said we hook it up to our computer and as long as all the ODBII diagnostics check out and you don't have any other codes we don't do the sniffer test. Then they just check with a mirror for the cats. So as long as the cats look like they're intact we don't check any further.

This came from the state inspection employee.

I need to go for a tune anyway so I'm going to ask a bunch of questions at the performance shops and see what happens.

Failing for catback makes no sense to me whatsoever. I know in NY LTs are a no go, because they aren't CARB approved (moves cat location further away from engine) and touching the midpipe, unless the stocker is damaged, is also a no go (mine were damaged ). Catbacks in no way break any rules unless they make your car exceed noise regs. JBA shortys are CARB approved, so they are OK here as well, but other brands are also a no go. I believe NJ and NY have very similiar rules.

exactly. Made no sense, they will fail you for any excuse what so ever in Nj, I will never go to a state insp. station again. Long story short, after goin over my car with the "fine toothed comb" they guy calls over his manager who fails the car stating "cars with a side exhaust aren't legal in NJ." A dozen phone calls and two letters to the state later I got it passed, but after a huge pain in the ass and 3 months.

Something to note: if you fail an inspection in NJ, it only stays live in the computer for 45 days from the date of the inspection. During that time frame no private inspectors will touch the car, I know I tried. Once the 45 days is up it is erased from the computer and you can go where ever you want.

Also the statement above is true about the no sniffer unless there's codes in NJ. I also asked an inspection tech.

Where do you go to get your car inspected. NJ emissions is one of the worst....what the hell kind of state inspection place are you going to that they are just OVERLOOKING that??!?!

....or is it NOT a state inspection, and its an independent place.... *IF* thats the case, oh then I understand.

obd 2 cars dont get the sniffer they plugs in to the dlc to make sure there are no codes thats it. they dont stick anything in the tail pipe its all through the computer
