Longtube Headers?

I posted a thread a while back about which midpipe to purchase for my 1995 mustang. I decided to get the BBK o/r h pipe. then I looked at their longtube headers. right now I have my stock shorties and was woundering if the longtube headers are really worth the money. I have saved enough for the h pipe but was unsure about if i should save up and spend money on the headers.

Long tube headers will certainly outperform shorties...

But they can be a major PITA to put in. If you are doing the exhaust, I would recommend biting the bullet and spending the money and doing the extra work to put the longtubes in. It is worth it IMHO...

Of course, if you have an AODE, those headers won't fit anyhow...

BBK won't fit an auto?

They do make LT's for Auto's but it will add lots of time on your install. The stock K-Member is pain to install LT's on a manual then add in the width of the auto tranny. Don't know what your mods are but if they are minimal I'd pass on LT's. Best time to install LT's is when your installing heads. At this point they would drop right in from the top plus give you more HP with the heads.

I do not believe that BBK Longtube headers will fit with an AODE.

I think MAC makes a set that will and Pacesetter says theirs will.

I dont see any problem putting LTs on a stock headed, minimal bolt-on car. You gotta start somewhere right? most people cant just throw 2 or 3grand at the car in one sitting for bolt-ons, you build your combo one piece at a time. Once you do decide to put aluminum heads on it, you will already have the LTs, one less thing to buy at that time, your not gonna put stock headers back on a new alum head. just my .02

Ive got bbk longtubes with my auto, tight fit. the O2's need to be relocated to the out side.

Longtubes are worth the money. It's a good bit of work to get them in, but still worth it. BBK recently added a number of part numbers to their line up. Call them and ask what headers you need. They have a good customer service department. There are a bunch of threads on this website on how to install longtubes.

I have the MAC 1-5/8" long tubes (part no. MAC-TF94015) and I used BBK O2 sensor harness extension wires (part no. BBK-1676). Installation wasn't too bad. The passenger side header slipped in from above and the driver's side header from below when the engine was disconnected from its mounts and jacked up a couple of inches. Didn't need to disconnect the steering shaft but the oil dipstick tube did need to be bent forwards.
The headers fitted nicely but since the passenger side header runs very close to the starter, I insulated the starter with a DEI Starter Versashield. It's worked very well so far.

I looked up BBK h pipes and they don't make shorty h pipes to fit thier LT for my year.(1995). i have heard that mac makes good LT's, does thier short h pipes fit well?

I had my stock H-pipe shortened to fit my long tubes and all 4 cats are gone.

Why would you pay all that money and do all that work for a sweet set of long tubes and route them into the tiny a$$ stock h pipe?

BBKs slipped right in from the bottom without issue for me. I really don't know what everyone is complaining about on the installation.

Probably didn't order the H-pipe with the longtubes and it was a lot to ship an H pipe to his location.

Exactly. Labour's cheap over here so it didn't cost me much to modify the stock H-pipe, and most of it has new 2.5" sections.

alright thanks guys. i might just get the o/r h for now, don't really have the money for the pipe and LT's. later on though would i have any trouble just fitting my LT's to the h pipe? or would i need to buy another separate pipe to put on?

Long Tube headers need a h or x pipe for long tubes, shorties use one for shorties, if you change in the future you will need to buy a new h or X pipe.

Why an h-pipe?

For just a little more money, you can get an x-pipe that'll flow better than your h-pipe could. Personally, that's what I plan on doing.
