I hear a clicking noise whinto it hard or engine break hard. ile I'm coasting and there's something on the side of the road to reflect the sound back. I also hear a "knock" when I suddenly let off. I let the car run in gear and there' was a little more deflection then I liked when it surged. SInce the rear was leaking from
the cover anyway I thought I'd take it off clean and change the fluid.

I guess I've not messed around with rear ends before, but this doesn't look like it has clutches in it, so I should be able to fill it with straight 75w-90 oil ?

Also, how does the wear pattern on the gears look and is the clunk or play in it to much?

How many miles are on this??
Have you thought about checking your axle bearings?
While you do that check your brakes.....

It's got a lot of miles, 130Kish.

If it was axle bearings, wouldn't I hear that when it was off the ground? Same with the breaks, thought I'd hear it when they were off the ground. Wouldn't hut to check the drums though.

So I need to add some friction modifier to the refill
Is the wear pattern ok?

Check your driveshaft bolts as well.

The 8.8 in my old truck had similar play and it was because the spider gears were worn out.

The spider gears look like they could be replaced as this is what new ones look like:



With the miles on it you would want to replace the limited slip clutches as well. Remove the drive shaft and see if you have any play in the pinion. If you ever do have to remove the pinion nut and crush collar I would strongly suggest you replace the crush washer with this:

Ford Solid Pinion Bearing Spacer

Have it on both my 8.8's and makes changing a leaking pinion seal stupid easy.

" In my Opinion" a solid spacer is the ONLY way to go... A little more work maybe but worth it..
