Looking at getting a 5.0

Hi, I am new to the forums and was wondering a few things. First off, I am looking at a 1989 5.0 GT but it is an auto and I was wondering how hard it would be to install a 5 speed in it, or is the auto a better option for a track car. I am planning on dropping a crate motor in but not until next year. I was looking at the 302 or 306 GT40 crate that produces 345 hp. Is this a good starting power plant, because the engine in the car I am looking at has 180K on it and if I start modding, I want a newer engine. Thanks in advance.

They auto can be just as fast as a stick with a stall convertor and a shift kit. You can convert to a 5 speed, if you want to. I would say if you really want a stick try to buy one. With a crate motor you can also go for a 331 or a 347 for more power, depending on your budget. I'd say with 180k just get a rebuild kit and save the money for some heads and a matching intake.:nice:

Got any pics of the car you're looking at?

The swap wouldnt be too bad, and it would let you upgrade to a performance transmission if you are going to make this a powerfull car in the upcomming years... Id say keep looking though if money is going to be an issue. good luck
