The only reason the other parts, other than the absolutely bare upper and lower, are in the discussion is because some of them are upgrades over your stock stuff, like the TB as prime example. If you get the right upper and lower, the rest of the parts don't matter if you don't want them to. Make sense?

I'll keep researching it. The upper intake and valve covers are off right now as the original idea was to clean them up and restore them. I am in no rush so my options are endless. It still is an idea, but I don't have all the knowledge I want about it to pull the trigger or just forget about it as of yet.

I don't think I've ever truly dealt with anything like this but I will mention everything I use when washing my car (especially the tough road tar/grease)...

As a car cleaner, I use regular ol' Dawn dish soap and a little elbow grease. Find it best to wash in the shade or on a cloudy day.

For tougher things, I use cleaners like Oops. Take road grime off easily.

Not sure if this helped, but it was worth a shot at mentioning it

It shaves right off in seconds... Leaves a nice clean look.
The pic shows the intake without the 'ear' on the side, and the red shows some of the silver paint flakes that didn't want to come off.
That is some TOUGH paint.

That's the first thing that's coming off of mine.

lol....I can't believe you think swapping out the stock manifold for an Explorer unit it too pricey and complex, but you're actually seriously considering spending time and money stripping and powdercoating a stocker.

no. neither pricey nor complex. just don't want to have to "fix" other things to make it work. I want it bolt on and bolt off. Still looking into the gt40 stuff, just less excited about it. Now the powder coating is an easy decision, I know someone that can do it for me.

just went to the local salvage yard. 1996 eddie bauer v8 sitting there. heavy front end damage, upper and lower intakes were pulled. heads are still there, passenger head cover is bent at the oil fill neck. would be a pain to get them out... but they look undamaged. are these the heads i am looking for? would my valve covers fit? or am i on a search for covers if i pull these?

they are going to be a half days work getting off. this thing got hit low in the front end, mashed is a good word for it. but from what i can see they left the heads because of the work involved getting to them. i see no damage. so when i go play i take the heads all the way down to the ?????? where do i stop parting?

funny. while i was looking at this car i saw an IAFF firefighter sticker on something so i swung around to take a look. it was my dad's old 1993 econoline van with a 351w in it. they never even pulled the motor! that thing was strong when we sold it 4 years ago.

Heads are the only other thing worth taking. If the rest of the car is fubar bring g a sledge and sawzall to make things easier.

cut the headers off and it should only take 2 hours or so to have the heads off

it might take alot longer. this thing took a hard hit. lots of stuff in the way. taking multiple sawzall blades.
