The fluid in my PS reservoir is dark brown. There is also sort of a whine noise when steering at low speeds. It's about time to change this fluid and wanted to know if there is a good how-to on this or if this is better to have a shop do? Also what fluid is recommended?

Thanks in advance!

I have been known to use a turkey baster to remove fluid and then mix in new fluid. Do this enough times and the condition of the fluid will improve.

You are aware that Ford uses ATF fluid in Ford power steering pumps.

wmburns I was not aware that Ford uses ATF fluid. Forgive me for my ignorance but is all ATF fluid the same? Regarding the turkey baster method, once i remove the majority of the old fluid, should I fill it up to the max line or fill it half way and rotate the steering wheel to get out any air then refill?

Ford would say to use Mecron V. However if you have Mecron III setting around, it would work as well.

Don't over think this. It's not designing rockets.

Remove the fluid. Refill to full line. Drive it. Repeat. (wash/rinse/repeat).

Don't tell my Wife what I have used her turkey baster for.

wmburns thanks for your help. Can Mecron V be purchased from any auto parts stores or would I have to go to Ford? Thanks for the tip on the turkey baster

Almost every auto parts store would have several brands of ATF that meets Ford Mecron V standard.
