I'm looking at a 99 Cobra Convertible at an auction. It has a red exterior. It has 27000 miles. I'll fill in more details when I get to see the car on Wed.

I was wondering how rare these cars were (being both a Cobra and convertible)? Is NADA or Kelly Bluebook Values accurate in pricing these because they claim it to be worth only $16500 to $18000 with that milage. It seems a bit low to me considering the low milage and the Cobra Coonvertible factor? Do these car sell for higher than bluebook because of their performance? These we're handbuilt 4.6L DOHC N/A engines? Were these the Cobras that were "overrated" in horsepower by Ford (99-02)? What is the true hp and trq ratings if this is indeed the overrated model? Does it being a 35th Anniversary Year car make it have any special options / emblems / trim? Any problems to look for? Were there any options on a Cobra that year?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the 99 models were the ones that suffered from the horsepower fiasco. The vast majority of them did indeed receive the "FIX" via a Ford dealership - you can verify this for yourself by running the VIN# by the folks at SVT if you call 1-800-FORD-SVT. A "fixed" 99 is just as healthy as an '01 Cobra though, don't let that deter you from making the decision to purchase a '99 if it checks out OK.

It might be a good idea to run a CAR FAX on this vehicle as well (auctions can be sorta shady, that could reveal potential problems as to why it is priced low - ie, salvage/repaired wreck, theft recovery, flood, etc).

Here's an excellent site that "TXsnakecharmer" has on his '99 cobra, lots of 99-specific information on it, worth bookmarking/checking out.

*specifically the section regarding the horsepower fix: http://www.shane.roberts.net/techman1.htm

For production numbers, you can check out the following URL to view 1999 cobra (coupe/vert/trim/color/etc) model info:

Look it over really good. Personally, I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't drive it (most auctions that i know of won't give a test drive) but that's up to you. The price is not low....it's just right...for the mileage and assuming it is in EXCELLENT condition. COBRA90GT has given you some very useful info and be sure to check out TXSNAKECHARMER's website. It's well put together and very helpful. These cars are awesome. Let us know the outcome. Ray
