Yeah 99-01 cobras can be found pretty cheap around here (Indiana)...when I bought my GT I also found a 99 cobra for $14,400, mint condition, only 14,700miles! This was three years ago too lol...

Why not get a Mach? Some insurers give them GT rates!

How are the 96-98 Cobra's? I have not researched much on them, I would consider that too as long as its low mileage. I need some schooling in the way of the Stang, all my friends have Imports but a couple have old school muscle as well. My buddy has a 66' A code stang which made me always want one.

If you're going to get a cobra, i would highly advice ONLY getting a 2001 Cobra. The 99s interior and exterior is basically just a GT with a cobra motor. When shifting the 99 cobra you'll also find your fist will often go right into the radio (crap design). And i think having the plain leather seats (just like a GT) is a turn off for the 99 Cobras (personally).

The 01 Cobra has an upgraded interior, both in the center console design, leather boot around the e-brake handle, Alcanterra (Italian form of suede) inserts & leather seats and most of the bugs of the model year worked out over the 99 Cobras. You can pick up a nice 01 Cobra for about $14,000.

If you go the GT route, get the newest model you can with the least mileage, they will all basically be the same car otherwise. Save for a few styling diferences like chromed headlights in the 99-2000 GTs vs smoked headlights for the 2001+ GTs.

Keep in mind that 99-mid 2001 production cars, both GT and cobra will have the T-45 transmission in it. The later model 2001-2004 GTs (and later model 01 Cobra) have the T3650 transmission, which is better (debatable) and stronger.

I sold my 02 GT for an 04 Cobra...but if i were you I'd get a 2001 Cobra and nothing else. The motor is better in the cobras, the mods you do to the car are more beneficial on a 4V motor over the GTs 2V. The cobra motors are hand built, and come with the exclusivity of being a cobra and SVT vehicle.

For reference:

96-98 GT: 4.6L SOHC (single overhead cam--1 intake valve 1 exhaust valve per cylinder) About 215-225hp (depending on year). Tremec T-45 Transmission. You can expect mid to high 14s in the 1/4mile (stock).

96-98 Cobra: 4.6L DOHC (duel overhead cam--2 intake 2 exhaust vavles per cylinder). Making 305 hp. T-45 Transmission. you can expect low 14s in the 1/4 mile (stock)

1999-2004 GT: 4.6L SOHC engine making 260hp due to its "PI" (power improved) flowing heads on the engine. Making more hp than the 96-98 GTs. 99-2001(early) T-45 Transmission. Late 2001-2004s have T3650 Trans. You can expect low 14s or 13.9 stock.

1999 Cobra: 4.6L DOHC motor, making 320hp. Also known to have lacking hp numbers than what was advertised. a "fix" was introdued to flash the ECU on the car as well as an exhaust change (I believe?) to make the car have the 320hp as advertised. Call SVT if you want to buy a 99 cobra and have them run the VIN# to see if the cobra has already had "the fix" done to it. By now i would imagine ALL have....Also have the T-45 transmission in them. You can expect about mid or high 13s in the 1/4 mile (stock)

2001 Cobra: 4.6L DOHC engine making 320hp (like the 99, only no "fix" issue needed to be worried about). T-45 Trans in earlier moddels, with the late model 01's having the T3650 Transmission. You can expect mid or high 13s in the 1/4mile (stock)

I also belive the latermodel 2001 Cobras have what is known as the italian made "TESKID" aluminum block, which is stronger than the other blocks put into the 99 and early model 01 Cobras. But someone correct me if i have my information mixed up there.

THERE IS -NO- 2002 Cobra ford did not make a 2002 Cobra. There was a break in the model years, and then ford released the supercharged cobras in 2003 and continued for 1 more year in 2004, making about 390hp stock.
