HI, I m new to this so please be nice to me. I have a 83 5.0 gt 5 speed when going into 2nd gear it will not stay there must be held in place ,but works fine in all others . is this an easy fix or should I just look for a better one?. No one has answered this but why cant I use a 5speed from a 4-banger. thanks for all the help it took me 14 years to get this car Ive never doon one before.

Others will have an exact answer for you, but the 4 banger tranny has a lower power threshold and (if I am not mistaken..chime in if I am) a smaller input shaft. The t-5 doesnt appear to be a difficult rebuild if you have some mechanical inclination. I am still deciding on an upgrade, but plan to rebuild mine due to a slight grind. Someone on here had a pdf file with the manual and break-down for it. IMO rebuild, make stronger, vice replace a third time. I will see if I still have the pdf file for you and post it later (if its found).

Sounds like synchros. Just do a rebuild on it unless you are making some big power. Also a 5.0 kills the 4 bange trans pretty quick because they juast cannot handle the TQ. Plus I think their gear ratios dont lend themselves well to the V-8 power.

+1 gear ratio in the 4 banger = no good behind a V8 for very long.

If it's not staying in gear unless held, then it's most likely the actual dog teeth on the gear that are damaged. A basic synchro rebuild kit will not fix this. You will need to replace the physical 2nd gear and the 1-2 synchro slider gear which are about $50-80 each new.

Prob is 1983 is a year that the t-5 was NON-world Class, so it will be tough to find replacement gears for your year. It might be cheaper and easier to start looking for an 85.5 and up World Class T-5.

See, I thought the same thing (not sayingit isnt true eaither) and when the t-5 on my 89 was having the same problem the shop that fixed it just replaced the syncros and if memory serves something about some plastic piece on the end of the shift fork and after that it never popped out of gear again.
