Lost control today... broke stuff

Sad day for the stang, Lost control... broke stuff

I had my car out today, although I shoulda been driving my truck cause I found an unseen icy patch... I was taking a right turn and my car whipped around, the drivers side wheel hit the curb enough to break the lip off my wheel and hop up over the curb (break #1 easily solved) being only several blocks away from my house I parked my car and had a friend pick me up to grab my jack, spare... after I pulled the wheel I looked briefly to spot other damage but couldnt see anything so I put the spare on. I started down the road with my car going started to clank (pretty loud) every revolution but the sound would change when I would brake, so my assumtion was it had to be a brake issue so I kept driving the short distance to my house. after a little ways it stopped clanking and turned into more of a metal on metal "brake grind" untill I stepped on the brake again then the clank returned... car is home now but I cant see anything wrong with the caliper or pads, nothing is outta place, is there a chance I bent an axle or something? I just never dug into the rearend of a mustang so dunno what the possible break is...
anybody have a clue? as Im just kinda curious as to what it would be.
as for the wheel I had new ones in mind anyway, Im just glad noone was behind me during the incident
any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

and if I did bend an axle I couldnt really tell if the car had a hop at all or not... the roads are so bad around here I couldnt say for sure that i felt anything, but its possible.

ok stupid me, I looked again cause it wasnt making sense, and yea I found a broken cal. bracket, it was laying right in position with a flush break so I didnt notice it right away, lol
so being that I broke the bracket I would have had to bend my axle right? even though I couldnt really tell there was a wobble while driving it home?
If so, do I replace passanger side axle as well? anywhere special I should go for an axle or just get one from ford?

just because you broke the bracket doesnt mean you bent the axle. were the lug nuts loose on the rim at all? this would allow the rotor to push against the caliper at a difficult angle causing it to break the caliper/bracket. You could have just broken the bracket and the rim.

The lug nuts were tight, so I know thats not the problem..

Ok so I pulled my caliper and took off the bracket which cracked near the upper mounting bolt. everything looks ok on the caliper, heck the pads arent even busted up at all. And so started moving the axle around.. Does anyone know how much play I can have (inward outward movement) when I pull on the axle? it moves a little, it has about 1/8" play, maybe a little less.. I just jacked up near the bad wheel so the other side is sitting on the ground.
I have new wheels on order already and was just gonna get a new bracket and try freewheeling it, is this a bad idea, should I dig into the rearend first and see if everything looks good?
