lost o/drive

I lost the overdrive portion of my a4ld. car won't move. If it's put in Drive, the car runs fine. How long can it be run using just the drive gear. I've been given differing answers; some say the rest of the tranny will go out shortly, others say run it like it is, just expect a little lower MPG. Any ideas?

I have something similar, but I can still drive in O/D, it just won't go into 4th. It's been running fine for nearly a year like that. (I can't afford to fix it...)

Even with that, I've still been able to get around 25-30 mpg (I put in a K&N filter, removed the silencer, and drive it rather easy)
