I am on a college students budget, which basically means non-existant. However, I have taken it upon myself to set aside what would usually be the booze fund, to buy some much needed parts for the car.

I have a decent cam, gt40p heads, and I am still running the stock manifolds with single exhaust

When I am done with school, I plan on getting a proper exhaust sytem, but for now......

I found a set of long tube headers for 99 bucks. I would rather have cheap headers to "tweak" them a bit to have them work with the gt40p heads, instead of shelling out the money for gt40p specific ones right now.

For the exhaust, I was thinking about a set of 20 dollar header mufflers. Basically glass pack/cherrybomb style. I could then pay my good friend raj at the exhaust shop to connect some turndowns, or maybe side exits before the rear wheels.

Would this be stupid loud? Should I just pay Raj to bend me a dual exhaust with rear exits for a few hundred?

I'm torn between a super cheap temporary fix, and shelling out a nice chunk of money for a proper exhaust. I think the cheap way would work fine, but would it sound like ass? I'm more worried about performance vs the stock manifold single exhaust, but not sounding like a desiel would be nice too

Ask other rodders in your area what the cops are like concerning exhaust on cars. Check out summit performance I know they have some decent"summit" brand mufflers for a lower price than name brand.

I would not do just cherrybombs off the collector.

It will be cool when its just sitting there idling and in front of other people, but after 10 minutes of driving it will get old quick.

straight pipe if you want loud but cops can get ya real quick. i mean if you want loud for temp. not really worth it. save up the money and get what you want. do it right the first time. or chop of the single muffler you have right now

Doing a "temporary" exhaust is the same as doing wrong and then redoing it; you do it twice and pay for it twice.

Hold out for the good stuff. Get the GTP headers and have a nice, full exhaust system put under the car. It will sound better, work better, and you'll be happier with the end result. You will see a power increase with the cheap exhaust, but I can just about guarantee the crappy tractor noise will get old quickly.

I bodged mine together and made it work and sound alright, but it definitely needs to be redone when I have more money. It looks bad, the idle is not so great, and it's too loud on longer drives.

yeah straight pipes and cherry bombs will just annoy you and you'l end up upgrading anyway so just save for what you want. Only make sure if you plan on doing anything with the suspension such as sub frame connectors, sway bars, or whatever that might interfere with the routing of your exaust do that stuff first so you only have to do the exaust once. I did my exaust about 6 years ago. (69 fairlane) it still sounds great but the factory steering (stupid power steering pump) and suspension are finally starting to give out. So now I want to put sway bars, x-braces, and everything under there and im probly gonna have to cut off the exaust and redo it to install all that stuff.

Oh yeah, personal prefference here, but i put these rediculously huge edelbrock long tube headers on mine and i hate em. Primary's are so big you can barely get a wrench in there and every time i gotta take em off it takes me like an hour each to get the things back on. I'm switching to some short tubes. Long tubes can turn out to be a huge pain. Or maybe you'l love em, my exaust does sound friggin sweet for my tastes with those headers but its gotta change.

one other thing, get aluminized pipes or something like that if you wanna keep it on there for a length of time. I got the steel type cuz it was cheaper and 5 years later they look really rusted. She spends the majority of her life inside the garage out of the elements too and i refuse to drive it unless the sky is blue and the sun is out so it got rusty remarkably fast.

I have a cheapo exhaust system sitting in my back yard. Sounds like a tractor.

That being said, I'm going to look for headers. I have GT40p heads, I know there is spark plug clearance issues and i search and searched but I don't mind if I have to loosen up the headers to change plugs. As long as they physically fit without actually touching the plugs, I can live with it/modify the headers. Patriot tri-Y's. Will they fit without spark plugs physically preventing it? I have no problems running 90 degree plug boots or getting a few short spark plugs to make it work or dimpling a tube to make em fit. I heard tri-y's work good with the GT40p heads because it builds good low end for the street.

yeah like i said everybody has their own preferences. Mine are hooker comp something or other i got used for like $75 for the pair. i thought i wanted to build a drag car back then and they suited me just fine. unfortunately i put em on a basically stock 302 and i think i actually lost torque in the process (exagerrated lol) since i don't see how it has much if any backpressure at all with this setup. that and i went from like 105 width tires to 145 width at the same time. so the tires are probly creating the illusion (since i actually get traction now and its hard to spin em) that it has less power, when it didnt have much to begin with. Anywho, i decided about a year ago im just gonna build a cruiser out of her and keep it around 350-400 horse and i just want to put short tubes on it to simplify things. She's gonna feel like a different car when i get that 331/347 (havent decided yet) built.

What chassis and engine did you put them on? Hookers generally fit rather well in '65-70 smallblock cars.

to bring this thread back to life...

i'm thinking about side exhaust. will a glasspack muffler tone down the noise so i can listen to some tunes w/ H or X crossover?

Glasspack is a generic term. The cherry bombs are glass packed (LOUD), as are most Magnaflows (mello). Having glass in them is not a clear indication of the sound nature and volume, too many other variables involved.

Generally speaking glasspacks are on the louder side of the spectrum unless the pipe bends as it goes through the mufflers.

It also depends on what the car has now.

I have the side-exits with ~24" Thrush glasspacks(the better perforated core type, not louved) and it was too loud inside. Putting an h-pipe between them helped, but it's still a little loud to comfortably listen to music. I have a Kenwood tape deck and Alpine amp, but the speakers are shot, so I just listen to the car.
