Interior and Upholstery Lowback racing seats?

Hey guys! I'm looking to find some racing seats that somewhat resemble the basic shape of the stock seats in a '79 mustang, but with a good bit of bolstering. My stock seats tend to slide me around when taking sharp turns. About as bad as a bench seat...

Any ideas? I'd want to have them reupholstered to match the original pattern and material, so it'd be better if they were bare shells.

Or would it make sense to cut off the top of a simpler bare aluminum Kirkey seat and have that upholstered?

Comfort isn't a massive concern. I'd be fine with just an inch of decent padding.

Take with a grain of salt...

From a safety concern I do not believe their are any lowback racing seat COTS. I have seen some in rat rods and T-buckets but they offer no support/protection if you were ever in a accident, the lack of support would jack up your back and neck.

As for the Kirkey seat in a street application (if this is street)) without the supporting brackets, rollbar/brace and belts...might be worth more of an hassle than it is worth. Has it been done and talked about here before yes, but most would prefer the the alternative below IMO.

Personally I would recommend an SN95 as they are snug fit at 215lbs, 6"0, and good lumbar over the fox and earlier seats.

I vote period correct 79-83 Recaro seats that came in some models.


They will hold you nice and tight and are actually damn comfortable.

Are there new versions being made? or would I have to find a pair of old ones?
They seem like they'd be pricey, but I like the idea.

They do sorta make a new version. They are called Recaro Specialist. You won't like what they cost plus the cost of rails and seat bases.

Late 80's VW Recaros are another option. Cheaper, but still pricey. I have these in my car.

You could also go with a set of Corbeau GTS II's, which look similar buy much cheaper.

I'd probably buy some of the old recaro's with torn upholstery for cheap(er)
I want to reupholster to look like my factory seats anyway.

What color is your interior?

You won't find any such thing as a "low back" "racing seat" beyond the Retro section of a JC Whitney catalog.
