The other day i went to replace my old worn out Monroe shocks (80,000+ miles) with some KYB ones. I noticed that in the box it says that i need to use the stock style torx head bolts and that they would not work with bolts that are used with Monroe/Gabriel shocks.

My question is, is this true or can i get away with using the nut and bolt that I have on there now?

Mine had regular bolts and nuts, no Torx bolts on it. Do you still have the "U" shaped bracket that attaches to the housing and the shock bolts to it? As long as the bolt is long enough and fits the hole snugly, you shouldn't have a problem.

my 87 GT has regular bolts in the shock while my 91 LX 4 cylinder car has the torx bit bolt. I dunno why they did it differently.

The last time mine were changed, couldn't get the torx bit to stay in tight enough to get good grip, so just use pipe wrench on the outside of the bolt. Worked just fine.

Mine has a Torx Bolt that holds the bracket for the lower mount to the axle housing and a Normal nut and bolt holding the lower shock to it. I think you will be fine.

I never got to see the OEM shock bolts for the fox for sure (the shocks had been replaced once, but they normally dont come with new fasteners, so...........) and I also had nuts and bolts.

The 94 was original and was nuts/bolts.

I gotta ask: what's the difference in the torx heads vs conventional heads? Does KYB tech have any insight?

Good luck.

I have no Idea what the difference is, but the papper that came with the shocks said to use factory style torx head bolts.

One of my local Ford dealers has a couple in stock, although he said they are obsolete, so if the bolts I have now won't fit, I'll just go get the factory ones. From what i can tell the only difference might be that the mounting holes might be different sizes, but its hard to tell by just looking at them.

I guess I'll pull the bolt out of the shock when I get off work and see if it fits in the new one. If they dont fit i'll just have run over to the dealer on Monday and get the factory style ones.
