According to The Official Ford Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference & Performance Handbook, the weight difference between an LX hatchback and a GT hatchback is 87 pounds.

There is absolutely NO mechanical differences between the two models. Same engine, same brakes, same suspension. All of the differences are cosmetic only. Like Crane said in the first post: Which one do you think looks better? Thats the difference.

I thought the GT's had slightly larger sway bars and stronger and control arms.

The only major dfference between 87-93 gt and lx is that the 87-88 Lxs came with the base model seats in the hatch. 87-89 coupes had the base model seats too.

After that, same interior as a gt.

Mechanically, they are the same. Its amazing that 20+ years later I still hear the myths about different springs and sway bars and such.

2.2L LX are a different stock....but a 5.0 LX is just a GT minus the areo kit

Shaolin suggests you buy a 86 GT there by eliminating any guess work of which looks better GT vs LX

Isn't that something, Since 1987 when I first heard that, I'd always thought the GT was 200lbs heavier with all of the body kit, extra brackets, etc. That's an old myth! wonder where it came from and why it lasted so long...

I knew everything else was the same, but that's interesting about the weight... Wonder where this magic 200lb number came from, apperently i'm not the only one to have heard it...

In the same book, it states that the Fox Mustang is 200 lbs lighter than the II it replaced. Maybe that came from there? Dunno.

the hatch on hatchbacks have decent weight to them though, weighing in around 60-75 lbs. with the glass. a coupe trunk weighs around 15-20 lbs.

so the difference between a GT and an LX coupe is around 90-120 lbs.

I always wondered if going with a fiberglass hatch would be close to the weight of a notch.

I would say probably close, but only if you used the lexan/plexi window....those hatches with glass weigh a ton, man! I would have guessed more than 75 lbs. Ever picked one up?

I thought 86 had the exact same motor as the 87-93?
