Howdy Gents.

Happy New Year to everyone.

First off. Aaron, do not take the title literally. :D I could see him drawing stick figures................ nevermind.

I got a great deal on a new Crane LX91 ignition coil. For those that don't know, it's kind of a universal coil that comes with its own heat sink.

Has anyone used one of these in the stock mounting location? How did you mount it?
Maybe use an intermediate plate (mounting the coil with one set of holes and then the intermediate plate mounts to the OEM coil bracket)? Because one needs room for the belly of the coil, this seems like a PITA.

Did you use the heatsink that comes with the coil instead of doing an intermediate plate?
I think height starts to become a concern.

I'd relocate the coil but I only have a short MSD coil wire (if I had a fox coil wire, I'd move the coil). You guys always have slick ideas and mods with this type of stuff.

Thanks guys. :nice:

Duct tape :D

Ok, seriously now. This is the coil you got, correct?

Do the mounting screws go all the way through with a nut on the backside, or is the heatsink threaded? I'd say if they go all the way through, mount it right where the stocker is at, with some rubber isolators between it and the accessory bracket. Just need some longer screws and probably 10 minutes of your time to drill new holes to mount it. Moved to tech, too. ;)

Hey Matt,

Thank you for the reply. :nice:

I read your reply after you posted it, thought for a bit and tinkered with the thing a little.
The bracket is not threaded, which is kinda weird because the coil can float in its groove.

I am kind of a melvin and don't like to drill OEM parts (like the coil bracket).

Here's what I did in case anyone uses one of these and wants an idea of how to make it work with a short coil wire (I'd recommend just getting a PS91 and calling it good).

I used some 1.25" #6 screws through the coil's layer of brackets (in Matt's pic, they go through the closest layer, the coil and come out just beyond the middle bracket in the heat sink). I have nuts under the middle bracket which hold said screws in place. This just mounts the coil to the housing.

I Dremel'd out the two rear mounting holes at the very bottom of the coil bracket so they lined up with the OEM coil bracket holes (because now I need to mount the heatsink to the OEM coil bracket). I only have the Crane bracket held to the OEM coil bracket with two fasteners - I didnt feel like making a bracket to bolt the front two holes down to, and then bolt that bracket to the OEM coil. I did consider the intermediary bracket but I didnt want to add height. FWIW, the width of the holes in the heat sink is almost the same as that of the OEM bracket, but the heatsink is a good bit shorter than the OEM bracket. Like on the end that points towards the intake (where the coil wire goes), the heat sink stops well short of the holes in the OEM coil bracket.

Here's how it looks (sorry for the small pic):

I will note that the coil is pretty close to the hood - this should be a valid concern for anyone using one of these the same way I did. I have my secondary alternator cable running under the OEM coil bracket, which kind of limited my options (I could have removed the OEM coil bracket altogether and bolted the Crane bracket/heat sink to the PS bracket itself were it not for my alt cable and one large wiring harness).

Anyhoo, that's how it went......

Thanks again and HNY!

hows the ps92 coil i am also thinking about upgrading my coil and i was considering using the ps92 and puting it on the driver side frame rail and using a longer fox style ignition wire??? can i just bolt it down to the frame rail??

heres the pic of the coil

Fish, I dont have a PS92 coil (I seem to recall it being more oriented for drag racing. I think I read you're not supposed to run one without a CD box, for instance). The 91 series are more of a bolt-in replacement. I do recall the coil specs (91 vs 92) being way different.

Your idea is not a bad one. I think some blower guys have had to move their coil to the frame rail (a la a Fox III). I dont have a spare coil wire for a fox so I was stuck (and the MSD wire is annoyingly short as it is).

You might want to get one of the MSD or Crane harness adapters so you dont have to cut your OEM harness to get the wires over to the new coil location. It's hard to see in my pic but my connection is where the stock coil connected (though my coil is turned 90* and all that). WIth a harness kit, you could extend the wires via the harness instead of your OEM wires. It would be easy enough to extend the radio interference cap as well.

Grady, you and I have always been of very like-mind with regard to ignition mods on these cars. :nice: I'd need a lot more power before needing any upgraded parts.
I'm sure I won't be able to tell any difference in anything. My stock coil has over 100K on it so when I got a honkin deal on this, I got it to play with.

Mr Grady, I hope ya had a nice NY celebration. :nice:

i have the crane hi6 box u think the ps91 is the better choice??

I dunno. That's something that the Crane people would know. From what I have gathered, for street cars that run for a long time, the PS91/LX91 is a good choice.

For drag cars (they dont run for too long) or crap like big motor boats (very good cooling properties), the 92 can be a better choice. I'd use a 91 personally - either a PS or LX. For your application, either one is probably about as much BS to mount. The LX has two wires leaving the coil (there's no connector like our OEM coils) and it has a heatsink (might be easier to mount up. ).

I really would send a quick email to Crane though.
