maaco a bad choice as usual?

umm... the guy at maaco told me my black mouldings on the side of my car couldn't be painted because they are one time use only, and if they took them off to paint them, they would bend and never go back on?

is he serious? he says they will have to be replaced... but ummm... i dont want to replace them... anyway.. maaco wont be touching my car... but i wanted the quote...

i just wanted a quote.. to get my rear bumper, and middle mouldings painted white...

its just kinda temporary til spring break, and i dont think maaco could screw up a little paintjob like this...

but my question is... do i honestly have to replace the mouldings because they cannot be repainted?

i was thinking about this, how about using some fishing line and kinda sawing the adhesive off, no bending or pulling required!
thats what im gonna do if i ever decide to paint my car,the 85 moldings are a PITA to find.

You are 100% correct. Fishing line is the perfect removal tool. That's what I used a few years back...

Guy's go over to the Four eyed pride website. Hissing Cobra wrote up a thread on restoring the mouldings. I think many of you will be suprised. Yes you can paint them. And yes you can straighten them out when they get bent. It is a GOOD READ.

there prices for new ones though even used is pretty high up there. we only had to replace one. just have to be careful when pulling them off.

New moldings are well over $100 each from 50Resto.
Theyre very easy to bend and screw up and getting the adhesive off so you can reuse them is a pain.

I was going to replace mine when I get it repainted but its way too expensive to do that so Ill just leave mine on. Theyre body colored anyway.

I have had no problem taking them off. A hairdryer and a guitar string work wonders.. Just lay them on the groundflat when storing them..

Mine were taken off another car from a junkyard and put on mine. They're pretty wavy too. Way to cut corners eh? LOL

You could also just paint them on the car if you want to avoid screwing up the door mouldings. If preped correctly it would turn out well.

I'm not as motivated to go to the junkyard.

Molding is my enemy. I re-applied each peice back onto my car, and the drivers side I finally gave up on. I'll let someone from the autobody deal with that nightmare.

I should have asked how to get the adhesive off, on :SNSign: before I did it myself. I used a combo of a leathermen, a knife, and my fingers to remove the adhesive tape. Who would of thought, it would be painful.
