I need to put my catted h-pipe on once a year to go through aircare (emmissions test) and in the process of taking off my aftermarket h-pipe, I broke one of the header studs off in the header flange. It isn't sticking out at all, so I can't use vice grips to get it. Should I try and work it out, maintaining the threads for future use? Or would I be able to drill a new hole and drop a new bolt in, with or without threads?

Right now I'm driving around with one stud holding the header and h-pipe together and the exhaust leak is making my car run like ass.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek

You should be able to drill them out using an extractor bit, but before you start you should soak the broken stud with penetrating lube. Also, try using some heat to unstick the broken stud. With a little patience and the right extractor bit, you should be able to get it out without damaging the threads on the flange.

That happned to me. I ended up having to take the headers off the car and try to pull the studs out with vice grips. I got the studs out but the threads were GONE and the holes were oval shaped instead of round. Those were with BBK shorties, I now have Mac longtubes (sucky fit, but I was in a hurry for headers). Next time I have the headers off I think I'm going with some hooker longtubes.

Good luck!

Thats the way I finally got them out, but they weren't round anymore. Needless to say I now use those headers as wheel chocks.

Bringing back my own thread...

Now I see that one of the other studs is bent. I'll be able to turn it out, but I need to know the size of the stud so I can buy a replacement. Anyone know how big it is?

note to everyone - MAC HEADERS COME WITH ****TY HEADER STUDS

Replacement Studs

I also need to know the size for replacement studs. Ford Racing Headers come with crap studs as well and two of mine have the threads completely rusted off.
