I have a 2001 gt. i baught in july. Since then i have learned that the car came with 373 gears in the back and a CAI. but i dont know what else it has. I havent run it on the track yet but i have raced quite a few cars and everyone tells me that the speed in the car is not normal for a pretty much stock gt with 373 gears.

The only other thing that i can think of is that its a mach 1 or maybe there is some kinda tune i just dont know how to check what the car had done to it before i baught it.

How do you check if you have a 2v or 4v. Also, if you thought your car had work done to it before you got it, how would you check?

The car has a mach 1 hood scoop but there are no decals or anything associating it with a 4v. can i check the vin or car tag for this info?

The Mach 1 didn't come out till 2003, so that's your answer on that.

As far as how to check, you can check your exhaust pretty easily. If you pop your hood and look down the side of the engine block from the Driver's side...you should be able to tell whether or not the car has headers. If it has some headers, they will be clearly visible as 4 distinct and unique pipes leading off from the side of the block. Some might even have a name on it like "JBA HEADERS".

You can then get on the ground near the car, and look down the center. If you see no cats (catalytic converters) on the mid-pipe...then you know it's been changed. Also, if you see it making an "X" shape as opposed to a "H" shape, you know it's been changed. Finally...if the exhaust pipes in the back are any wider than 2.5", they are probably new.

Other engine mods are harder to spot:

A timing adjuster is a blue wheel that sits on the front of the crank wheel.

Underdrive pullies have unique gaps in their design as opposed to a solid piece of steel.

The standard Mustang throttle body and plenum is 65mm, and has a Mustang pony emblem.

A supercharger would be visible: it would look like a large tubular mechanism attached to the belt system, with pipes leading to and from the air intake system.

That's pretty much it as far as visible mods that would affect the engine's power. To check on cams/rollers/valves/compression/pistons/fuel pump...you'll need a shop.

so 4v engines didnt come out till 2003? I didnt know that. thanks.

Well that's not 100% accurate. The Mach 1 didn't come out till 03, but the 4v motors were around ever since the 99 Cobra I believe. The 4v motor was originally just the cobra motor with some SVT extras, then in 2003 they made the Mach 1 (which is essentially the same thing as the older cobra minus the IRS) and put on a supercharger to the cobra model.

I think the 4v 4.6L was available in Cobras in 1996.

i thought oil filler position had to do with romeo/windsor differences, not 4v vs. 2v

the best way to distinguish the engines is the SIZE of the actual heads lol

take a good hard look at pics of 32v modular fords and then a good look at your engine

Ok that puts things into perspective. ill try to get a good pic of the engine later today if i get the time. i appreciate all the feedback. now im certain its a 2v.

I agree with the hood scoop being a design flaw. i wish it were functional.
