I just picked up a 97 cobra convertible (actually traded my TT 5.0 fox for it) and noticed the surprisingly lack of bass from the system. Now, while I'm not intimately familiar with the mach setups…I was expecting more from the bass department. The previous owner recently installed a newer sony x-plod head unit. All speakers seem to be working and hooked up to the proper channel, as the f/r fade and l/r balance seems to adjust properly. Is this just normal for the verts, as they don't have any speakers in the decks (as they don't actually have a rear deck)?

You should have noticeable bass - you've got speakers in the 1/4 panels instead of the rear deck but a considerable amount of bass should be coming from the door speakers too.

The previous owner may have had a sub in there - poke through the settings in the head unit and see if some hi-pass crossover has been enabled, or if bass-blockers have been installed on the woofers.

You may just need to tweak the EQ in the head unit though - I found I had to do a bit of tuning to get my aftermarket head to sound as full as the factory unit. A broad overall bass boost and a little midrange cut around 2.5K with a big narrow spike at 60HZ for kick drum kick works pretty well for me.

Well, someone before absolutely had a sub and perhaps another amp...as there is some wiring behind the trunk liner that points to it. There is also some wiring from the battery with what looks like a noise filter.

I did mess with the head unit...adjusting everything I could, but it really didn't help. If there was a "loudness" function to enhance bass..I'd turn it on, but nothing.

I was hoping this might be an easy/quick fix...but perhaps not.

Ok, I found out how to access some of the functions on the head unit. You can only do it on the remote…go figure. I'll update with the results later.

I cant for the life of me understand why the loudness makes THAT much of a difference. With every other head unit I've had, the loudness wasn't a necessity at higher volumes to bring the bass out...but damn did it make a difference!!!!
