I'm new to the forum, and I need some help. I am converting my '88 5.0 SD to MAF using a kit with harness, sensor, sensor tube, al tubing etc., all supplied by Fiveology. Their wiring instructions are great, but I would like a few suggestions on where to best mount the sensor. I heard rumours (yeah, I know) that it should be at least 2 feet from the throttle body, and others have told me it needs to be close to the throttle body. I was also told to make sure it was mounted to insulate from it vibration. The sensor is a hot wire type sensor.

The air intake you use will determine that. You can ( and should) use a factory 89-93 air intake and it forces it to the stock location.

Just remember, air don't like to turn. The maf needs straight air so you need at least 10" to 12" of straight pipe in front ( in coming ) of the maf and I say 6" of straight out the back ( out going ) so less chance of turbulence.
if you have a stock 5.0 bracket they have rubber isolators that the maf bolts to and is L shaped to bolt to inner fender panel. This is not based on any scientific facts, just the opinion of someone that can visualize things in cartoon form.

Before the throttle body.

Everything else can be mitigated. Try and figure it out so that the air filter has the least amount of turbulence heading toward it and is not sucking in heated under-hood air.

I agree on the stock airbox... I may even have one, and the associated couplers ect...

Thanks for the advice.

I have an air raid cone filter that I have been using until now.

I like the 12” and 6” guideline.

If I use a stock intake and stock airbox I will need to finagle something anyway as it doesn’t fit my cobra exactly.

Please explain, because '88's had no Cobra. Cobra was '93 only for Fox body.
Ford made a MAF conversion kit for the '88's. I had one but sold it long ago.
Manual is still online: http://www.foureyedpride.com/vb/album.php?albumid=1526&pictureid=11821
Post some pics of your engine bay.

Fiveology conversion looks like a pretty standard setup. Stage 1, 2 or 3? Did you purchase this already?
It sure does look like a C&L MAF housing. I can see where they got all the other components from, then more than double the price to you.

Thanks for the pic btw.

And thanks for the link to the manual. I seem to have misplaced the print copy.....

My car has LOTS more room for intake set up than the original fox body.

Since this is a Fox Body forum, I assumed it was a Fox body.
Always good to put your build in your signature. So only the engine is an '88?

Yes the engine is an ‘88. I posted here because the engine is a Stang.

Here's the setup on my '88 that I'm converting to MAF. Just use it as a guide for your setup.

Only picture I could find with similar engine in AC Cobra replica.
Plenty of length, not much width.

That guy has his MAF clocked incorrectly. It may work, but it's calibrated for the sensor to be at 12 o'clock.

He's also using an 89-93 mustang upper air intake elbow

Clocking is irrelevant since the air filter is mounted directly on the maf inlet.
https://web.archive.org/web/20150225072815/http://www.cnlperformance.com:80/MAF_info.php?section=15
In part, this reads...
When running either a conical filter mounted directly on the end of the MAF housing or an inlet tube arrangement that features a straight airflow path in front of the meter, the orientation of the MAF unit will have absolutely NO effect on the signal output. We have tested the calibrations of mass airflow assemblies on our flowbench with them mounted in various orientations, including on their side and even upside down, with absolutely no change in the calibration signal.
