MAF Question.

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a prob I'm having...I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my MAF. In my Haynes manual, it has some guidelines for testing it with a multimeter. According to the manual, the pins on the MAF (as numbered in the attached pic) are pin 1 is REF, pin 2 is SIG, pin 3 is GND, and pin 4 is B+V (batt). In the manual it says to test the resistance between pin 2 and 3, and if it is infinite resistance then you have a bad MAF, however, when I tested pin 2 and 3 I got 0 ohms of resistance! Maybe this is normal, but it seems strange to me that SIG and GND would at least seem to be shorted. Could one of you pull out your multimeter and test pin 2 and 3 on your MAF and let me know if there is 0 resistance between them? It would be a great help because I can't seem to find the answer!

BTW, I have a 2000 GT.

What are the symptoms that bring you to testing the MAF? Did something happen to the MAF (like I dropped one and broke the wire, which I could see was broken!)

I've been having trouble with unstable idling and sluggish performance. I've already replaced the fuel filter, installed K&N air filter, replaced PVC valve, cleaned IAC, MAF wires, and fuel injectors, replaced plugs, checked EGR valve, checked for vacuum leaks. I don't have tons of $$ so I don't want to just replace the MAF to eliminate it as the cause. It does seem strange to me that the SIG and GND would appear to have 0 resistance between the two pins. Also, when I drove the car with the MAF unplugged it didn't really seem to make a difference. With all this said, if the MAF is bad it isn't triggering a CEL.

Do you have any other mods and, if so, what are they?

It ran with the MAF disconnected? Mine will just start and die with the MAF disconnected. Have you checked the TPS? If noone post up I'll check mine later.

Just a CAI.

Yeah, I checked the TPS by backprobing the connector and watching the voltage go from around .8 volts up to 4.9 volts with the pedal on the floor. I was surprised the engine ran with the MAF disconnected too!

d/c the battery and let it reset for like 30min. start it up and drive around and see if a light goes on.

The MAF is just the stock one that came on the car... I know that probably doesn't say much lol. I bought the CAI from eBay - it's your typical aluminum one and it came with the K&N filter.

With the MAF unplugged, or plugged in? I have unplugged the battery for like 10 minutes to clear a CEL that I triggered by forgetting to put the EGR vacuum line back on.

Don't know if this is any help mine looked like it had 6 wires. I checked it (was raining didn't pull MAF out) I got 0.2 ohm reading.

Did you check the pins on the MAF or on the wiring harness that is plugged into it? The harness has six holes but only the middle 4 are used, the MAF I think should only have 4 pins on it (?). If you tested the 2 pins I did, .2 ohms is pretty close to 0 so it probably is normal...

Thanks for checking... I guess I better keep looking for my problem...

I checked with it unplugged. Since it was raining I didn't pull MAF out to look inside I only got one res. reading where #2 and #3 should be.

Newer MAFs incorporate the IAT sensor in them and all six wires are used. Older ones do not and only use four. Not sure but I think it changed in 2003...

I see... Maybe BooWFO tested two different pins than I did? Hmm.... On the 6 pin MAFs I wouldn't know which one is ground and which one is SIG. I wonder if my local parts store will let me test one of their new ones without buying it lol. How much are MAFs anyways? Aren't they expensive?

Is yours the 4 pin one? Could you test it for me? Geez, I feel like such a pain in the ass, I just want to figure out what's wrong with my car!

four inside pins are the same I believe. the two pins on the outside are part of the IAC on 02s and up.

I just ordered a new MAF from FordPartsOnLine.com for $128. Mine hasn't been right since I over-oiled my K&N last spring. Tried cleaning, but still having problems. Hoping this will fix it.
