MAF screen?

what exactly is the MAF screen for, that is in between the MAF and the air box? it is the stock air box still.

I can see two purposes. First, it helps keep crap from entering the engine in case of a filter failure (i.e. you have a tear or missing airfilter...) Second, it helps to buffer/straighten airflow before it hits the MAF sensor making the readings more accurate.
