First off, hello again to everyone, been a long time since I posted here.

Ok, my question is this: what is the purpose of the screen in front of the maf on my 03 gt? (I know this question has been posed before but as time goes on and more people try things the general opinion of what works and what doesn't work can sometimes change. So I'm looking for some new opinions.)

I am trying to make the car as efficent as possible before I get into any major mods. So far on my quest I have dropped my et by .4 and increased my mph by 1.6 (on average). So every little bit helps.

When I installed my Vortech, the instructions said to take it off, but I don't see how its gonna change much, its not a very restrictive screen.

you'll need it as it has a rubber o-ring on it the helps seal the MAF to the air box + the screen helps straighten put the air flow going to the sensor sampling tube. leave it in place, NO gain by removing it.

Do not modify the MAF screen, tube, or housing.

Mine called for its removal with the JLT RAI, so i did. No difference or any issues.

BTW, what did you do to gain .4 et and 1.6mph?

leave it alone. The screen helps smooth out the airflow

Leave it. If it wasn't necessary and essential, Ford would never have put it there.

Exactly. If it wasn't needed they would save millions of dollars by eliminating it from every MAF they make

It does act as a gasket. If you remove it as I have when using a Mac Cai you
will need a thicker rubber or cork gasket to get a good seal. I tried using a
thin gasket from Mac but it wouldnt seal because my ford plastic maf is not
perfectly flat.

I appreciate all of your opinions. I am just looking for things to do to make the engine more efficient. I could just throw a blower on it or spray it until it pukes but I believe in making it more efficient before I go with a big power adder.

I dropped my et/improved my mph with
A generic fender mounted CAI and generic filter (dam K&N was to big to fit).
I did a homemade port and blade fix on the throttle.
Throttle spacer
ported the upper plenum to smooth that out (A LOT of TIME spent doing that, aftermarket would have been easier but oh well).
A plenum spacer, what a pain getting that metal tube screwed back in.
I also took the time to fasten everything from the throttle body to the plenum spacer together and used a dremel (since it’s aluminum) to make sure everything matched up. You would be surprised at the huge lips and size changes between pieces.

Over all, the car is a bit softer below 3000 but after that you can feel the difference.
60ft 1/4 mph
avg stock # 2.285 14.550 96.81
only k&n drop in 2.241 14.565 96.90
avg last 3 outings 2.168 14.132 98.17

Street tires only, I like the challenge. Best so far is 2.112 60’ 13.998 and 98.82

Sorry to string this out but the stock runs are the average of 17 runs and the last 3 outings are the average of 10 runs.

Not exactly. There is no reason for the snorkel in the fender. I do think the maf screen should stay unless you have a mod that tells you to remove it like the JLT.

Leave it in take it out who cares it won't make any difference either way.
This topic has been hashed and re hashed for the past 10 years.

Wow, a bit touchy on this? Did someone steal your screen when you weren't looking?

If you read my openning post, I am trying to get put out a feeler to see if anyone has any new info. Obviously most mods that have been done to the 4.6l have been hashed and re hashed for the past 10 years. (I believe that people used to say NPI heads were junk but someone took the time to properly check them out and now we know something different...) If a question bothers you, don't waste your life responding to it...

Says who?

Maybe for us consumers there is no need for it, but Ford must pass some rigorous test criteria, many of which have nothing to do with performance. The snorkel you find on these cars is a result of that.

It all depends on which perspective you have.

The snorkel in the fender has a purpose, it is to reduce noise.
