Yes, it does. But is it essential? No.

Again, "essential" by whose criteria?? For Ford it's absolutely essential.

For the person that wants more out of the performance of their engine and doesn't care how loud it is, no.

What is your definition of essential? Is it needed for the vehicle to operate? Than no it is not needed. But there are many parts on the vehicle that fall in to that category. That does not mean that the vehicle is better off with out them. The vehicle must pass many tests before it can be sold. Many of the modifications to the intake and exhaust systems which are made by people here would not be legal for Ford to sell the vehicle that way.

What would you suck up that the airfilter didn't stock but the screen would? I understand the principle behind your statement, I'm not picking at what you were saying.

You wouldn't think anything could get past the filter but i've talked to people who have found small debris i.e. leaves right in front of the screen.

Guess mines eatin leaves! LOL

Iv had my air filter fall off from my turbo though! Thats not a very good thought, having blades turing 60,000-100,000 RPM, with no filtration! (I was racing a camaro...and found the filter off when we pulled over and I showed him under the hood LOL. THEN I forgot to put it back on and drove 10 miles home like that, with it riding in the engine bay )
Fortunatly all is well and I bought another clamp for that side haha. Im also glad that its so tight that my filter couldnt fall out!
