maintenance question

My stang already has 50k miles. I have no idea if the previous owner did any type of maintenance.


After how many miles should you change the fuel filter, transmission fluid, transmission fluid filter? how about having the injectors cleaned?

any other things that need to be taken care of with these amount of miles?

The fuel filter should be done every 15,000 miles. If you run 93 octane about 20,000-25,000 miles. I'd do the transmission fluid and filter now as well as the rear differential fluid. I'd switch to Royal Purple or a high end synthetic fluid in all of them. What kind of oil and filter are you running in the motor?

Where do you find 15,000 Miles for Fuel Filter? I looked in the scheduled maintenance and it says 30k. However,, there is never any hurt changing a filter early!

That's my maintenance schedule. I've changed them at 30,000 miles and after seeing what was inside the filter, I stopped. Of course that was running 87 octane, too. I've done 15,000 miles on 93 octane and it was pretty clean. 25,000 and it was dirty. I'm not even positive if it's a matter of mileage more so a matter of gas station selection. Who knows ... I just like to keep my car running in tip top shape so it might be overkill but it's cheap insurance.

Well I just had the oil changed about 2 weeks ago. Royal Purple 5w20 with Mobile 1 oil filter.

Where can I find Royal purple transmission fluid? What fuel filter, the regular one from a dealer or is there a better one?

Anyone with a little more technical know how than myself care to explain how to do the following/ or what to look for exactly?

Inspect and lubricate all non-sealed steering linkage,ball joints,suspension joints,half and drive-shafts and u-joints.
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system.
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.

Buy the Royal Purple from AmericanMuscle.com. I think they are nearly the cheapest place plus the free shipping makes it worth it. Also type in for the coupon code: mustang forums. It should still work. I run OEM filters for the oil, fuel, transmission, etc.

Inspect and lubricate all non-sealed steering linkage,ball joints,suspension joints,half and drive-shafts and u-joints.
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system.
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.

Here are some general suggestions:

1- Nothing to inspect or lube. S197 GT linkages, joints, etc., are sealed.

2- Remove the wheels, replace the brakes if the pads are 1/8" thick or less, replace the rotors if they are rusty/have deep grooves/warped(brake pedal pulsates when braking)/less than minimum specified thickness.
Check brake lines for leaks, and make sure brake fluid is at the specified level in reservoir.
Parking brake handle should exert force against your hand when both engaging and disengaging the parking brake, and the car should not move on an incline with the PB engaged and the tranny in neutral.

3- When the engine is cold, check the hoses and their connections for leaks, make sure they do not feel soft especially where they have bends, and check that the coolant is at the specified level in the reservoir.
