I thought that the cable snapped...

But I get under there and release the cable expecting it to slide right out as I pull on it, nope.

The cable is good.

The car can turn over, and run, but the clutch does not grab.
Minor Clicking sound in the bellhousing.

It can run with clutch released in neutral.

Is the friction plate shattered all to hell?, and if so, why the crap did this occur if I was in mid shift with the clutch pedal pushed in?

I found a 1" by 1" chip of friction material in the little cover that goes over the cable on the tranny. Not good at all.

I guess it is time for a centerforce dual friction clutch kit, am I wrong.

Thanks for the help, my car is dead in the water for a long time now...

The clutch is the factory part from 1992... So at least it went out like a champ!

But I can't be sure what went wrong, I don't want to order anymore parts untill I figure out what happened for sure. ( I understand that this will ultimately be known when the mechanic pulls the tranny..)

But the friction plate sounds like a good place to start.

Centerforce Dual, or King Cobra?, ( For a Daily Driver Cruiser )

Anyone have any expertice with the entire clutch plate shattering, while the clutch is pressed? :(

I am not sure if the throwout bearing is gone, or messed up, or if I should just replace it all

I don't want to order the parts yet, because the tranny has not been dropped, but I would like to narrow it down a little bit.

I am considering the King Cobra, from CJ's, but any other help would be appreciated.

It is kinda hard to diagnose without looking at the car in person, as you suspect. If you have a decent set of tools and a place to work on the car, you could pretty easily do the change yourself with a friend or two for support. Worse case scenario, you would need to replace flywheel, clutch plate and pressure plate. You should always change the pilot and throwout anyway when you change the clutch. If you can get a good deal, I would just change everything, including the throwout bearilng retainer.
