On my 84 stng that I just had re-wired. I went to start it and it made like hollow backfire sound through the carb it sounded like. And a small fire was going in the barrels of the carb. What causes that, and what are some good remedies. I just had major re-wire work done could it be remnants of that?

One thing you need to check after you have a carb backfire is the power valve, it usually blows.

As far as the fire source... The backfire is from a cylinder that fired when the intake valve was open. Check your firing order and verify that all cyliders fire when they should...

Fire + Carb.... Almost burnt down my friends roadrunner (oh the memories)

That use to happen to me. My problem was that I was flodding my carb.
Now that I hear the responds that you have gottem i am wondering is it possible that it happend to me b/c my cam is so big and might have left the valve open for to long. I hope every thing turns out OK

Weird that it has not done it since. I think I better take it to a shop. The wires and stuff are on correctly. Maybe the carb needs a re-build or something.

too much fuel and wrong timing/firing order. this happened to me about 3-4 times trying to start my 466 when it was done, it turned out that we had the firing order wrong, it loaded up with gas, fired while an intake valve was open and traveled up into the carb and started a small fire. scary stuff if you've never seen it before. DOUBLE, TRIPLE, FRIKIN QUADRUPLE CHECK YOUR FIRING ORDER. and remember that fords goes down one engine bank at a time 1-2-3-4 and not side to side like chevys.

When you see the fire - KEEP CRANKING!!! It will suck the fire down into the cylinders and go out. That's the reason it is always a good idea to keep the air filter on, it helps stop the fire from spreading.
